The cloud gaming industry is projected to grow by over 300% over the next two years.

According to a report from HG insights, over the next two years, the cloud gaming industry is projected to grow by over 300%. Which means there will be new sales opportunities for cloud providers. In recent years, cloud computing has been a key factor in the growth of the tech industry. Cloud-based services are extremely sought after by companies from a range of industries, and the gaming industry is just one of the many that is adopting it.

What is cloud gaming?

Cloud gaming is when you play video games on a remote server located in data centres. There is no need to download and install games, instead, streaming services use an installed app or browser on your device to deliver gaming data, which needs a good internet connection. Despite seeing and interacting with everything locally on your device, the game is rendered and played on a remote server.

How does cloud gaming work?

Cloud gaming can take place on most electronic devices, including PCs, consoles, mobile phones, tablets and select Samsung smart TVs. In most cases, cloud gaming requires a monthly or yearly subscription in order for you to have access to content.

Cloud gaming works similarly to how you stream movies and TV from services like Netflix and Prime Video. Cloud gaming services execute the game on their servers, as opposed to operating it on your hardware. Following that, the game records your actions and streams each frame directly to your device. If you have a strong internet connection, the end-user experience is remarkably comparable to traditional gaming.

Why is cloud gaming so popular?

Tech giants including Microsoft, Google, and Amazon are paving the way in cloud gaming. Previously smaller companies attempted to launch cloud gaming services however their infrastructures were not large enough. With the support of some of the top tech companies in the world, cloud gaming can now offer lower latency, greater frame rates, and easier setup.

Some of the benefits from cloud gaming include:

  • You have endless storage space, as you never download anything outside of the streaming service’s application.
  • It is more affordable, as you don’t need to upgrade your components or buy a new console.
  • It is more convenient, as it works across devices, you can play no matter what screen or hardware you have.

The future of cloud gaming

As mentioned previously, tech giants are leading the way for cloud gaming, but according to a report from HG Insights, there are a large number of small gaming businesses that have seen 100x growth year-over-year and will require additional cloud infrastructure to support growing traffic demands. This presents great opportunities for cloud sellers in 2023 and beyond.

The report shared that gaming companies’ annual cloud infrastructure spending grew to £11.5 billion, up from £11.3 billion in 2020 and the global gaming market is expected to reach £166 billion in revenue by 2024.

As more industries are being transformed by the cloud, the cloud computing industry will continue to grow, and businesses will compete for the best talent. Cloud computing is one of the top IT and tech skills to learn in 2023 and it can help IT professionals secure a top-level job in the tech industry.
