Dropbox to Drop its Carousel and Mailbox Services

Dropbox, the popular file hosting and sharing service, has announced plans to shut down its email and photo services, Mailbox and Carousel in the new year.

Introduced two years ago, the services were an extension of Dropbox's main cloud storage service which provided users the ability to sync and share photos through Carousel and recieve emails using an alternative email client called Mailbox.

It now appears that due to lack of interest or usage of the apps, Dropbox will kill off these services in favor of focusing on developing the Dropbox file-hosting app itself. Both services will shut down in the new year with Mailbox closing down on February 26, 2016 and Carousel on March 31, 2016.

"Building new products is about learning as much as it’s about making. It’s also about tough choices. Over the past few months, we’ve increased our team’s focus on collaboration and simplifying the way people work together. In light of that, we’ve made the difficult decision to shut down Carousel and Mailbox.” said Dropbox chief executive officer Drew Houston in an official statement.

Dropbox is used by many businesses and organisations across the world due to its quality cloud based solutions and collaboration services. The move to focus on file hosting and cloud services is a welcome move to many people invested with Dropbox, but the departure of Mailbox hasn't gone down well with cosumerists who praised the app's innovative approach to email. Dropbox says it considered open-sourcing Mailbox, but ultimately decided against it.
