Job Description Summary

Work with the Risk and Engineering Support Director to understand and articulate Cruises risks and to provide assurance to Saga as the ship owner of the effectiveness of the combined Saga -

Cruises and Management Company’s delivery of safe operation of the vessels and effective Risk Mitigation.The role requires a high level of technical knowledge of and commitment to risk and safety management in the marine environment. It is demanding of leadership skills that can operate across lines of authority whilst preserving them, drawing on the knowledge skills and commitment of others, especially peers and superiors, in order to deliver. It is a challenging balance of deep specialist knowledge and broad interpersonal skills to influence and inspire improvement, with the ability to hold to account in a positive and constructive manner.

Saga Cruises is undergoing an exciting transformation to an all new fleet over the next 5 years and needs to rely on effective risk management to deliver that change agenda. The safety culture evident ashore and afloat is a crucial aspect of change; this role will lead its development and implementation.

Responsibilities

- Lead the design and implementation of the Saga Cruises Assurance Framework and its supporting processes and procedures reporting to the Framework Sponsor and drawing on expertise in the Operations team and third party ship managers, specifically:

- In conjunction with the third party ship managers and the Director Marine and Technical Operations create and manage the Cruises Owners Assurance Visit (OAV) cycle.

- Lead the planning, preparation and delivery of each OAV and follow on visits including assembly, briefing and management of the OAV team drawn from Operations specialists.

- Produce and deliver OAV reports and track performance improvement.

- Lead quarterly Risk Register review with Risk Owners and report findings to the Risk Committee.

- Lead the integration of the Saga Cruises Assurance Framework with Project ORCA Head Office Review.

- Lead the development of the Saga Cruises Safety Culture in collaboration with the third party ship managers and all departments within Saga Cruises, reporting within the Operations Transition governance framework. Post transition there will remain a continuous improvement responsibility in consultation with the Hotel, Marine and Technical Operations managers.

- Lead investigations as required by the RES Director or CEO Cruises and specifically into suspected shortcomings in safety or regulatory compliance, drawing on specialist support from within the Operations team as necessary.

- Provide advice, guidance and function leadership for risk management policy, processes and compliance to project and operations managers within Saga Cruises.

- As directed by the RES Director, liaise with Saga Group Risk Department on Cruises matters and maintain the Cruises PLC Risk Portal.

- Act as secretariat for the Saga Cruises Safety and Risk Committees, leading on production of Committee and Board reports.

- Work with the Management Company and Saga Cruises Directors to identify risk and safety management improvements and recommendations.

- Work with the Management Company and Saga Directors to ensure that the vessels comply with relevant and applicable Saga policies.

- Act as SAGA PLC subject matter expert for customer safety requirements.

- Contribute to Beyond Compliance and other improvement programmes, leading projects where appropriate.

- Attend meetings & produce reports as required for Board / Group

- Represent Saga Cruises Limited at the Group Environmental Committee Meetings.

- Represent Saga Cruises Limited as appropriate at industry forums.

- Manage the Saga Cruises training budget.

- As an additional responsibility, lead on Cadet training programme in liaison with the Fleet HR Officer

The Individual

- Capability, Knowledge and Experience:

- Computer literacy in Excel, Word, Windows.

- Thorough understanding of preparation of Management Information

- Marine and cruise industry experience preferably as a seafarer and/or auditing experience.

- Comprehensive knowledge of the International Safety Management Code (ISM)

- Comprehensive knowledge of the Code of Safe Working Practice for Seafarers (COSWOP)

- Good working knowledge of the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC)

- Good working knowledge of MARPOL regulations.

- Effective knowledge of budget management and financial planning.

Education and Qualifications:

- Internal Lead Auditor’s qualification

- Ship’s Safety Officer Certificate or Designated Person Ashore training.
