Digital Services - Graduate Placements   Apply before 11:55 pm on Sunday 19th March 2023   Location Cardiff, Wales, CF14 3UZ   Job summary An exciting opportunity has arisen for innovative, highly motivated graduates to join our Digital Services Team within Companies House in Cardiff. The programme runs for 2 years and will start in June 2023. You will have the opportunity to be at the forefront of the Government's Digital Transformation and to develop our services to meet the ever-changing demands of the UK's business landscape. Throughout this programme, you will develop skills and knowledge in the following areas: website, web service, and internal system development and maintenance, data science and product development.  There will be two further graduate positions which will operate purely in Software Engineering for the duration of the programme. Please note, the grade and salary for rotational and fixed positions are identical.   Being a graduate is more about your attitude and ability to learn, rather than your previous experience. As a Digital Services Graduate you will be expected to attend the Cardiff office when required (at least 1 day per week) to allow ongoing support and development and to allow you to collaborate with your colleagues. Job description We are looking for talented individuals to join our 2 year graduate programme, which will transition into permanent positions once successfully completed. - 2 posts will focus purely on Software Engineering - 2 posts will rotate through the following areas - Software Engineering, Software Testing, DevOps/Platform Engineering and Data, Analytics and Research (DAR) Software Engineering - Development  Companies House has several internal systems that are core to the processing and management of the information stored on the Companies House Register. These systems are researched, developed and maintained by teams within Companies House.   The teams that develop these systems use a wide variety of skills and technologies such as Linux, AWS operations, Terraform, Concourse (building and maintaining pipelines), Ansible, Java, Kafka, MongoDB, Docker, JSON,?Elastic Search, JavaScript, SQL, Mesosphere and an ever-changing technologies to carry out this work. DevOps - Platform Engineering   The team is responsible for the automation of Companies House software delivery processes and environment creation. The team is working towards replacing human labour by creating automated pipelines that will deploy code automatically into production.  The team also creates and supports development environments for the CHS Services and will be responsible for the legacy development environments as they transition to the cloud. In addition, the team are assisting in the migration of the on-premise infrastructure to cloud based services and control access and user permissions for AWS. Some of the services that the team are responsible for are Concourse, Jenkins, SonarQube, Vault and Artifactory. Software Engineering - Testing and QA  The Test Team is responsible for ensuring the production of quality software. As one of the test engineers you will play a pivotal role in influencing the development of our products. Within this role, you will be a representative of the end-user, remaining customer focused and ensuring that satisfaction is delivered to the customer.   You will have the opportunity to practice all modern forms of testing, as well as learning about the development of automated scripts using popular frameworks (like Cucumber), using behavior-driven development, which shifts the focus of our products to the end-user and enables us to get a clear understanding of their needs.  You will gain insight into the use of modern technology like API development using popular tools like Postman and will even automate your tests using frameworks such as Karate. You will understand the importance of application performance and gain further insights into the non-functional side of testing, such as performance testing, and gain an understanding of the importance of securing applications ensuring modern security standards are adhered to. Data, Analytics and Research (DAR)  The Data, Analytics and Research (DAR) team provide essential information and expertise supporting Companies House vision of using data to drive confidence in the UK Economy.  The team collects and analyses data to form strategic outcomes and predict trends.  The team's work can range from establishing data requirements for the latest policy initiative to helping operational areas understand the barriers to increasing their team's performance and much more. Within DAR, the Data Team lead the data transformation needed to realise Companies House's strategic vision. Data Science team lead data innovation, optimising processes by leveraging data, combating economic crime by detecting suspicious activity.  Statistics team provide analysis supporting policy development, strategic planning and service projects; they generate Official Statistics and workload planning. Corporate Performance team's task is collection, monitoring and analysis of performance data enabling evidence-based decision-making improving performance of services and against public targets.    DAR have a broad range of skills matching their wide remit. The multi-disciplined team comprises statisticians, data analysts, data scientists, data engineers, operational researchers and social researchers.  You will have the opportunity to join the brand-new Data Science team, which has only recently been established in Companies House. This function has been set up to further unlock the value of our data, by combining advanced mathematical and statistical methods with computer science. At its core, data science is about the ‘art of the possible' using novel ways to produce high quality analytics and operational models.  Going forward, we are looking to build upon the data science foundation we have created, by developing new mathematical models using advanced analytics techniques and introducing new methods to extract and disseminate information in real time.
