A leading premium automotive business and leading to move towards electric autonomous vehicles.

What to expect

Chassis Engineering is responsible for the design and release of a number of key vehicle systems - suspension architecture (subframes, suspension links, knuckles, engine mounts, etc.), suspension tuning (air suspension, active roll control, springs, dampers and anti-roll bars), braking, steering and wheels & tyres. Within the Steering, Wheels and Tyres (SWAT) group, the Lateral Motion (Steering) System Engineering team is responsible for the delivery of SWAT system performance that meets the requirements and targets set by attribute teams.

Reporting to the Group Leader for Steering System and Axle Performance CAE, this role requires an individual to assess proposed system solutions for steering and lateral motion against the vehicle targets set by the attribute team. This role will take advantage of a variety of CAE methods; most often full vehicle multi-body system models.

This role provides a key service to the steering system architect and steering solution architect roles. There will be a strong interaction with attribute teams (mainly Vehicle Dynamics) to support the negotiation of vehicle performance targets.

Key Accountabilities

* Working across all new vehicle programmes to perform analysis and tuning of virtual vehicles for optimisation of steering and handling performance
* Work closely with the Steering System Architect and Solution Architects to determine the schedule of work for the role
* Support (and occasionally lead) negotiation with attribute functions to set vehicle level performance targets
* Liaise with the virtual vehicle build teams to agree the timing and supply of virtual vehicles
* Present at system peer reviews and Chassis Technical Reviews as required
* Perform feedback driven continuous improvement of the methods and processes associated with this role

What you'll need

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential:
* Relevant engineering degree
* Demonstrable experience of cross-functional target negotiation to achieve vehicle attribute performance
* Experience of multi-body system simulation tools
* Working knowledge of typical requirements for dynamic attributes. Able to perform simplified target generation and error checking by hand calc, Excel or coding methods
* Good working knowledge of chassis systems
* Ability to select suitable analytical techniques for issues encountered in the role. Ability to critique simulation methods, articulate and manage the risks involved
* Strong verbal and written communication skills required to communicate across multiple business functions combined with a confident attitude.

Desirable:
* Simpack, Carmaker and Matlab software knowledge
* Vehicle dynamics physical tuning experience
* Experience of analysis of data collected from vehicle dynamics driven or rig-based test events
