There is more to the RCN than you might think. We're a trade union with a membership of close to half a million nurses, midwives, nursing support workers and students. We support their practice, represent them, lobby on their behalf, and develop them. We exist to make a positive difference - to the working lives of our members and ultimately to standards in patient care. Our employees are drawn from many walks of life - we are nurses, marketers and communicators, administrators, IT professionals, policy and finance experts, lawyers... together we are so much more. We couldn't do what we do without our people.

We're accredited with Investors in People Gold Standard. Our people are our greatest asset, and we want people who can contribute to our purpose in line with our values.

Every day will be filled with possibilities as you design and develop exceptional web-based applications. You will also use your positive attitude, excellent communication skills and knowledge to help inspire and encourage new ways of working.

This varied role is responsible for the development and support of the RCN's services and applications that underpin its website, membership, and business systems. You will be working collaboratively in a supportive team to deliver diverse projects using modern technologies and practices to provide world-class online experiences. While delivering projects to timeframes you will be given enough time to complete development to a high standard.

The engineering team is based at the RCN's Cardiff Gate office and London HQ - flexible working options are available and occasional travel to the office may be required.

As well as exceptional customer service, to join us you'll need at least two years of experience in developing web-based solutions to meet technical requirements and business objectives. You will be passionate about learning and finding the most elegant solution to complex business requirements.

You will have experience in developing using PHP as well as working with full stack technologies including HTML, MySQL, JavaScript, CSS. You will be familiar with Object Orientated Programming and have experience in working in an Agile development environment.

Knowledge working with Drupal, Symfony framework, Sass, jQuery, Git, CI/CD pipelines, AWS, .NET, Sitecore, Azure are desirable but not essential as personal development and support will be provided where necessary.

You will need to show adaptability, reliability, the ability to deliver to timescales and a commitment to collaborative working. You will be an excellent communicator, have an analytical mindset, and a passion for development.

To succeed at the Royal College of Nursing all you need to do is think bigger, better and brighter. And with an attitude like that, anything's possible.

What we offer you

We expect you to look after your customers. And we expect you to be rewarded for it. Our pay is highly competitive with annual leave up to 32 days. We offer an impressive range of benefits, a broad range of learning development opportunities and an award-winning health and wellbeing programme.

Balancing work and life commitments is important to us as an organisation. We are a diverse organisation and understand everyone has different needs. Many of our employees enjoy flexible working enabling them to deliver results whilst having a good work life balance. We offer generous maternity, adoption, paternity, and shared parental leave packages.

As a result of our response to the COVID-19 pandemic most of our staff are currently working from home. When this ends, we'll start trialling blended office and home working to empower our people to do their best work recognising that, to give our best, we must be able to balance the demands of work and home.
