Schroders Personal Wealth (SPW) is a joint venture between Lloyds Banking Group and Schroders - two of the UK's largest names in banking and asset management. We were created to help more people across the UK benefit from financial advice. We have the advantage of solid foundations and a strong heritage, but we take a fresh, transparent, and personal approach to financial planning.

The newly formed SPW Technology & Engineering function is responsible for building the technology platform to support our new venture. We are entirely in the cloud, taking advantage of powerful commoditised offerings where we can, and building bespoke cloud-native solutions when they can differentiate us from our competition.

What you'll do

As Cloud Architect Lead within the Architecture and Engineering team, you will provide distributed system architecture consultancy across all our delivery projects, from the integration of new SaaS solutions to in-house built solutions. In doing this, you will ensure alignment with our core architectural principles ensuring we build a robust architecture that focuses on avoiding undue complexity and over-coupling, and supports us in our goal of becoming a truly data driven organisation.

You will be involved in the design, steering and implementation of cloud native solutions and key components from monitoring, alerting, account automation and teardown, general health checks, applying good practice and patterns, service mapping, secrets management and vulnerability management.

You will ensure the DevOps direction set out at the start of a project is maintained throughout delivery, and that IaC and automation decisions are documented in an appropriate, but still lightweight, manner. In particular, we encourage the inclusion of ADRs within our code bases for this purpose. You will work collaboratively with the software engineering and DevOps teams to build operationally robust and secure systems, with low cost of ongoing change, and high levels of automation in build and deploy.

What we're looking for

Lead the architectural design and DevOps processes, be hands-on when needed, from scoping each project for implementation or upgrades, diagramming and educating developers and DevOps as to best use AWS, Azure and other cloud services.

Deliver proof-of-concepts, provide direction to development and DevOps teams, and support the implementation process where necessary

You come from a background in cloud architecture, in which you demonstrated an eagerness to expand your set of skills and learn new technologies, adopting best practices and have experience working across different cloud vendors.

You retain hands on engineering skills and are happy rolling up your sleeves on occasion. Our core technical stack is Bash/TypeScript/Node.js/React/AWS/PowerShell. A willingness to learn is as important as previous experience in any or all of these.

Ideally 5+ years, full time experience with:

Concepts: Distributed Systems, Monitoring Design, Decoupled Designs, Cloud First Designs, End to End automation, SSO (Okta/azure ad), zero trust infrastructure design, DR (active-active and pilot light), after-the-fact monitoring and alerting

Tools: AWS, Azure, Terraform, CloudFormation, NodeJS, Bash, PowerShell, Docker / Lambda, CircleCI, GitHub Packages and Actions, SonarCloud, Aqua Cloud, Intruder, Okta, Azure AD, SQL.

We predominately use AWS but experience with equivalent tools and services in Azure is desired. You'll have a solid understanding of the opportunities and how to maximise our use of cloud computing.

You understand the many aspects of data and security throughout the end to end architecture.

You have worked on public-facing systems, and understand how to build them to be secure, scalable and resilient.

Using the well architected framework when evaluating a greenfield project or later implementation

Understand and evangelize the difference between a solution that solves a problem today vs one that's elegant and scalable. Most importantly, you'd advertise the one that's relevant within the context and timing of each SPW project.

You have AWS professional or equivalent certifications
