Help us achieve even more for the benefit of the environment.

The Environment Agency plays a vital role in the country's future. With a focus on reducing the impact of climate change, we work collaboratively with local businesses, civil society groups, local and national government bodies and wider communities to support and enhance the environment. Central to this work is our determination to handle and reduce flooding and coastal erosion risks.

We improve and protect the quality of our air, land and water by tackling pollution. We work with businesses to help them comply with environmental regulations and believe a healthy and diverse environment enhances people's lives and contributes to sustainable and resilient economic growth - and it is against this fascinating backdrop that you could find a truly challenging and exciting career path.

As a member of our Flood & Coastal Risk Management (FCRM) Directorate, you will take the strategic lead on flood risk management regulation and enforcement for rivers and large reservoirs owned by water companies, private operators and the Environment Agency. We want to successfully deliver on our business plans, and with huge budgets at stake, it is essential that £multi-million investment decisions are based in the most robust evidence. It is essential that value for money is being achieved in these projects, so you will identify and manage any operational risks that could derail their success, ensuring every decision is being comprehensively appraised. With a keen eye on improving our business efficiency, you will enjoy motivating teams, making the best use of the resources available to you without ever compromising on the highest standards. You will also take the lead in the Large Project Review Group with programmes of work worth in excess of £10 million, working with internal investment assurance boards to ensure all decisions are being properly scrutinised, and you will provide investment advice to both Defra and HM Treasury.

To make the most of this challenging role, we will expect you to either have a background in engineering (a chartered engineering qualification is not essential) or you will have experience in business assurance, project assurance, or asset management. With the capacity to develop watertight business cases, we will expect you to have good knowledge of leadership assurance. Financially astute, it would be helpful if you have a background in allocating funding or managing large projects, with the capacity to deliver programmes of work on time and within budget. Crucially you will be an inspirational leader, who is passionate about enabling a diverse workforce to excel. You will therefore have fantastic interpersonal and persuasion skills, and you will enjoy working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.

In turn, we can offer a highly desirable benefits package that includes generous annual leave, access to a competitive pension scheme, ongoing training and development opportunities and up to two paid environmental outcome days each year. You are also welcome to apply for this role in either a full or part-time capacity, and flexible working options are available.

If you are ready to do something truly unique with your career, and you share our passion for protecting and enhancing the environment, we would be delighted to receive your application.
