Research Data Engineer

The High Performance Computing (HPC) Refresh Project will deliver the next generation of research computing environments, replacing the current system with flexible and scalable High Performance Computing environments.

We are seeking to appoint a Data Engineer to support the technical delivery of the system.

Scope of the work / day to day activities

You will be working within the project team on the design and implementation of the data and storage solutions for the HPC and Research Computing infrastructure in Microsoft Azure public cloud.

You will be involved with the team stand-up meetings, design of the services, developing and testing the CI/CD pipelines to deploy services and systems, preparing documentation, troubleshooting and resolving technical issues.

Skills / qualifications

*Minimum of 3 years of working with Azure, and with developing and delivering Azure based solutions

*Azure experience to include setup and configuration of subscriptions, resource groups, VNETs, virtual machines, NSGs, security policies, image management

*Experience with deploying, managing and monitoring data storage solutions in Azure and with managing the migration of data between these solutions

*Experience with Azure's Storage Accounts, Files, Managed disks, NetApp files, Blob storage, MySQL, Zone Replication, Backups and Security

*Strong knowledge of Linux and BASH shell

*Experience with Azure DevOps and Agile working practices, CI/CD pipelines

*Experience with version control e.g. git

*Experience of working with Infrastructure-as-code (Azure CLI, PowerShell, Chef, Ansible)

*Desirable: experience with Azure's CycleCloud platform

*Desirable: knowledge and experience of performant data storage platforms, data practices, tools and workflows for High Performance Computing

*Desirable: recognised Azure based qualifications, such as AZ-100, AZ-104, AZ-303, AZ304, DP-204

Key objectives

1.Build a stable, resilient, and secure HPC environment to support a diverse range of HPC workloads which is fully deployable and tested within a set of Azure DevOps pipelines.

2.Build a secure storage platform for storing research data and mechanisms for moving data between the different storage options

3.Develop the mechanism and processes to collect, monitor and generate reports on the utilisation, performance and health of the HPC environments, including storage, and to proactively alert on issues or against events
