The Role

The SPW Technology & Engineering function is responsible for building the technology platform to support our business and you will be hands-on in the delivery of the new applications for our digital transformation programme. We are entirely in the cloud, with a greenfield tech stack; taking advantage of powerful commoditised offerings where we can, and building bespoke cloud-native solutions when they can differentiate us from our competition.

What you'll be doing

Hiring, retaining, mentoring and developing the team.

Leading the development of shared software components and libraries to accelerate the delivery of projects

Leading by example on coding standards, software quality, technical innovation and automation.

Helping ensure teams are following best practice, automating this where possible so that the right thing to do also becomes the easiest thing to do.

Participating in code reviews for the various delivery teams, to ensure we continue to produce high quality, maintainable code with appropriate documentation (the expectation is self-documenting code, with comments by exception).

Your qualifications & experience

You'll have experience building self-managing engineering teams, and understand how to nurture a culture of continuous improvement.

You'll have a strong background in full-stack software engineering, ideally with a front-end focus, in which you demonstrated an eagerness to expand your set of skills and learn new technologies.

You'll be able to clearly articulate what good looks like in software engineering, and describe how you help teams achieve it. You identify opportunities for improvement, in technology, tooling, quality control, and process, and execute on these.

You'll have strong hands on engineering skills in some or all of our core technical stack: TypeScript/Node.js/React/Kubernetes/AWS.

You'll have an understanding of the opportunities of cloud computing and how to use it well.

You'll have worked on public-facing systems, and understand how to build them to be secure, scalable and resilient.

You'll understand that successful software delivery doesn't just end at deployment, so you'll have experience with continually measuring the suitability and value of your products.
