A career defining opportunity for an experienced data architect to work within a truly agile team, designing and crafting data architecture solutions, including data modelling, and providing advice on the design and implementation of complex data structures.

About the UKHO

UKHO is an executive agency, sponsored by the Ministry of Defence. We work with a wide range of data partners to chart the world's oceans in order to develop and serve world leading software and data solutions to commercial shipping companies, navies and maritime organisations. Our products ensure safe navigation and global trade efficiency and support other marine activities including economic development, environmental protection, resource exploration and utilisation, scientific research and security and defence.

The collection, management, processing, exploration and dissemination of data is at the heart of everything the UKHO provides.

The role

UKHO's Architecture practice contains people with various specialisms and levels of experience who all support each other, share their perspectives and ideas, and seek to continually develop and improve as individuals and as a practice.

As a Senior Data Architect, you'll provide technical and thought leadership for data architecture throughout the UKHO. This will include the prioritisation of tasks and engagement with stakeholders to maintain a schedule of work. You'll be hands-on, conducting data modelling for exciting and innovative projects, as well as making sure that the UKHO develops best practice for the way it architects its data.

You will be responsible for data architecture across multiple divisions and data types (big data, structured, semi-structured and unstructured data) for multiple use cases including data science, transactional, management reporting and business intelligence purposes, balancing the need for data access with security, performance and regulatory requirements to ensure that the key UKHO data asset is optimally utilised and enhanced.

You will work collaboratively with business stakeholders, subject matter experts, architects, solution development staff and delivery staff to provide the necessary leadership that seeks to optimise the identification, definition and utilisation of data in order to maximise the value to the organisation, whilst minimising the risk. This will include developing, evolving, providing and supporting appropriate levels of data governance to ensure the long-term optimisation of our data assets.

What we are looking for

Key to this role will be your technical expertise spanning data modelling, data governance and data architecture. We are looking for knowledge and experience of data integration, developing and applying data governance initiatives and translating business need into the appropriate architecture using agile methodologies.

You'll be capable of engaging with and advising senior stakeholders, ensuring effective use of data architecture tools and techniques to support teams in understanding data structures and providing appropriate data governance. You'll collaborate with others in the architecture community, identifying good practices to adopt and evolve, sharing and developing knowledge and experiences of the practice whilst continually developing your own skills as part of a programme of continuous professional development.

And in return?

UKHO is a great place in which to explore your career potential and offers a wealth of training and development opportunities. While our projects are career-defining, the work/life balance that we can offer you is equally exceptional. Peoples' start and end times are built around their own preferences. We're all set up for working from home and encourage people to make use of this if they prefer.  We are committed to providing part time options and reasonable accommodations and will work with you to meet your needs. We also have an award-winning office environment, wellbeing schemes, a generous annual leave allowance, and access to MOD and Civil service discounts, the opportunities open to you here are hard to beat.
