The audio evidence you provide could make all the difference

The Met's Digital, Cyber and Communications (DCC) department plays a crucial role in the criminal justice system, providing all kinds of digital evidence. As a Digital Forensic Technician, you'll specialise in Audio and make sure officers have the material they need to support their cases.

DCC manages the forensic acquisition, analysis and presentation of digital evidence. You'll be based in the Audio Laboratory, where you'll help us make the most of evidence acquired from a range of recording devices. It's a diverse and fast-paced environment, where you'll perform a range of technical tasks, from converting audio formats and recovering data to editing audio/audiovisual recordings. You'll also give statements in court and use your technical knowledge to advise officers.

To join us, you'll need a degree (or equivalent) in a technical discipline plus detailed knowledge of digital and analogue audio recording and processing systems. You'll also need the communication skills to explain technical concepts simply and deal with a range of people. With an interest in emerging technology plus an eye for detail, you'll be a valuable part of a highly motivated team.

Key Responsibilities:

Conversion of audio formats

Editing audio and audiovisual recordings

Basic enhancement of audio recordings to optimise listenability

Production of clear and appropriate casework records

Providing advice to officers

Following laboratory standard operating procedures

Preparation of statements and attendance at court as required

Equipment testing, fault finding and maintenance according to schedule and as needed

Researching, evaluating and installing equipment

Updating systems such as laboratory asset registers and databases

Organising technical equipment stores and supplies

Working within the Directorate's Quality Management System and participating in the continuous improvement of the system by engaging in the development and validation of methods, audits, competence tests, reporting non-conformances, etc. and suggesting changes to improve the system

Sharing information with and providing support to other members of the audio laboratory and DCC (Digital, Cyber and Communications)

Complying with health and safety policies and bringing to the attention of management any potential risks to health and safety

Other duties may also include:

Processing and enhancement of audio to optimise intelligibility / listenability

Carrying out technical checks and peer reviews for fellow practitioners

Assessing the suitability of recordings for speaker comparison

Assessing the suitability of recordings for ENF analysis

Assisting with ensuring the proper functioning of the ENF database

Voice disguise

Assisting more senior audio laboratory staff with acoustic crime scene surveys

Data recovery and recovery of damaged media

Delivery of awareness talks in order to raise awareness of audio forensics

Delivery of technical training
