Lead a team of technical experts working to keep our nation safe.

Human traffickers, firearms and drugs dealers, cybercriminals and exploiters of children.... at the NCA, we work at the cutting-edge of law enforcement, tackling those posing the most serious threat to UK life.

Now, more than ever, serious and organised criminals are finding new and more ruthless ways to prey on vulnerable people and the wider public. And as the crime landscape continues to evolve, so do we. Our teams work creatively and collaboratively, to find new and unexpected ways to stay ahead. Join them and your work will have a serious impact, as you help us protect millions of people across the UK.

Your role

By joining us in National Data Exploitation Capability (NDEC), you'll become part of the UK's national security capabilities focused on tackling the greatest threats to the UK population and interests through the use of data exploitation and data science.

The role of Senior Software Engineer (Dev Ops) will see you leading a fast-paced team that's building, developing and quality assuring the secure, stable and reliable operation of NDEC systems. We'll need you to champion learning as you draw upon your expert knowledge to guide and support our DevOps teams. Your specific responsibilities will include developing and delivering strategic and tactical data analytical solutions for operational challenges, working closely with other data leads to achieve enterprise-wide standards and handling data requirements to create a solid data product for both departmental and wider NCA teams. You'll also lead the design and optimisation of data services and ensure we deliver best practice solutions for the NCA's Business Intelligence systems.

This is a challenging and varied role that will give you huge scope to grow and make a tangible difference to your team - and the whole nation.

You may also be expected to work directly or indirectly in tackling child sexual exploitation and abuse. This may involve exposure to child sexual abuse images and material, so please consider the sensitive nature of our work before deciding to apply.

Your background

We're looking for an experienced leader who naturally inspires and encourages others - someone who's ready to make their mark by putting data exploitation at the heart of our fight against serious and organised crime. A confident decision maker, you'll be able to see the bigger picture as you work to manage change, drive improvements and champion the values of the DevOps team.

Experience of designing systems characterised by risk and technical complexity is essential - you'll be highly skilled when it comes to selecting the appropriate design standards, methods and tools, and embedding information security to mitigate the risks. You should also have experience in quality assuring technical work, and providing support and coordination across different systems. A relevant degree, DevOps certification and a knowledge of cloud-based analytical platforms aren't required but would all be advantageous.

Rewards

We take your career and development seriously and want to help you build a truly successful career with us and the wider Civil Service. So, we'll make sure you receive the right training, guidance and coaching as well as regular performance and development reviews. What's more, as a Civil Service employee you're also entitled to a large range of benefits, including generous annual leave, flexible working, a contributory pension, staff bonuses and recognition, volunteering days, childcare vouchers and other salary sacrifice options, and an employee discount scheme.

The breadth of our capabilities means there's no such thing as a typical NCA officer. We recruit people from virtually every walk of life, from police to project management, crime analysis and commercial procurement. Join us and we'll give you the powers, time and resources to see cases through, as well as high-profile experience to add to your record. On top of this, you'll get to work at the heart of law enforcement response and deal with the biggest threats to national security.
