Your role

By joining us in National Data Exploitation Capability (NDEC), you'll become part of the UK's national security capabilities focused on tackling the greatest threats to the UK population and interests through the use of data exploitation and data science.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you'll lead a team on the design and development of NDEC tools and systems as well as supporting operational teams with new tools and new ways of working with data. You can expect to work closely with other data leads to quality assure, advise and ensure enterprise-wide standards and contribute to strategy development. We'll need you to lead on the design, code, test and documentation of programs or scripts, and to head up the delivery of automated, reliable, and secure data services - that will include designing automation and writing ETL scripts and code. Throughout, you'll have a strong focus on quality and will be committed to ensuring confidentiality in line with NCA standards.

This is a challenging and varied role that will give you huge scope to grow and make a tangible difference to your team - and the whole nation.

You may also be expected to work directly or indirectly in tackling child sexual exploitation and abuse. This may involve exposure to child sexual abuse images and material, so please consider the sensitive nature of our work before deciding to apply.

Your background

In terms of your technical abilities, you'll need to be able to provide strategic direction to enable the design, build, integration, test and maintenance of data management systems. Excellent software development skills are a must, and you should have a strong knowledge of C++, C#, Python and Java. You'll be confident in holding the technical responsibility for all stages of a software development project, ensuring compliance as well as setting the standards for programming tools and techniques. A relevant degree, a postgraduate qualification or software development certifications and a knowledge of cloud-based analytical platforms aren't required but would all be advantageous.
