We are seeking an experienced Java developer to join the Mouse Informatics Group. We develop and support web delivered laboratory management software to help the scientific community research gene function through the use of the mouse as a model organism. The ideal candidate will be an excellent Java and database developer preferably with some front end web skills including JavaScript and CSS.  You will be experienced in working with one of the Agile software development methodologies. Working as part of an nine member team, you will be developing and enhancing software to support our client establishments around the UK. You will work closely with biologists and other informatics staff within our consortia to ensure that the software you deliver is effective and meets those customer's needs. Please be advised that our facility will be closing from September 2021 and phasing out into 2022 due to the Institute's scientific strategy. We still need Software Developers to help maintain and develop our system. Due to the closure, you will be eligible for a retention payment up to a maximum of £8,000 depending on start date. Essential Skills  Master's degree or above in computer related sciences or equivalent, demonstrable work experience. Evidence of a high level of competence in Java and use of the Spring Framework. Evidence of working within a full-stack environment Evidence of delivering a quality product within fixed deadlines. Evidence of having successfully worked in a collaborative, project-focused software team. Highly developed problem solving skills. Ideal Skills  Experience of SQL query writing and database development (preferably Oracle) Functional understanding of JSP and usage of JSP tags. Experience of developing laboratory information management systems (LIMS) software would be beneficial but not essential. An understanding of basic genetic terminology as applied to model organism production would be beneficial but not essential. Other Information  The Sanger's Mouse Informatics Group supports the Mouse Colony Management System, a laboratory management suite for animal husbandry and model organism research. MCMS is offered as software as a service and we currently have eight high profile UK client establishments. The next few years will see an exciting opportunity for the growth and future of the system, bringing a wealth of challenges and excitement for the software and its use. In terms of the variety of work we will encounter, the scale of throughput that we will support and the implications that the work will have in the fundamental study of gene function in mammals the challenges will provide an excellent career choice for the right candidate.
