Job in a nutshell:

We are in the process of re-building our award-winning, multi-channel, investment management platform and are looking to expand our Engineering team with a Principal Engineer.

We run a pure AWS-based cloud environment and deliver features using a continuous delivery approach. Our platform is built with a mixture of Java, Ruby, JavaScript and native mobile technologies.

We run a strong domain ownership model. As a Principal Engineer you will be a trusted technical authority and a credible leader who conveys a consistent strategic direction adhering to architecture blueprints and ensuring the highest quality implementation.

As a Principal Engineer, your responsibilities will include:

Support engineering leads with technical design decisions during project planning and execution

Maintains alignment with technical architecture group on technical strategy

Be the conduit of the architecture team into delivery teams; implementation adheres to architectural direction

Support the development and mentoring of engineers via pairing, quality reviews and knowledge transfers

Lead cross-team working groups to champion standards, improve engagement and collaboration and drive enhancements by functional area (e.g. JAVA coding standards)

Maintain deep appreciation of technical debt areas and set plans on how to tackle them

Assist team with tackling technically complex areas such as scalability, performance and security

Assess technical implementation quality, recommend and implement improvements

Become a technical subject matter expert on a number of Nutmeg's technical domains with the ability to support engineers on technically complex implementations

Requirements

Your skills:

Ability to work in cross-functional teams under a strong ownership model; the delivery function is co-owned by Product and Engineering with each team having end-to-end domain accountability (from design to operations)

Great team player with strong technical views focused on achieving best outcomes collaboratively

Ability to influence very experienced engineering teams in adopting designs and implementing standards

Strong mentor and technical subject matter expert with people-centric qualities

Empowers engineers with technical knowledge and with clear technical direction and supports them to best deliver their goals Inclined to get stuck in low-level detail to review code, troubleshoot issues and manage cross-team dependencies

You might also have:

Deep technical knowledge of the JAVA ecosystem, relevant IDEs and best engineering practices on the back-end

Strong expertise in designing, implementing and maintaining highly-scalable distributed systems

Commercial experience with building self-serve APIs and services with a micro-services paradigm

Experience in messaging platforms and event-driven architectures

Experience with Git or other similar distributed SCM systems

Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS and containerisation tools such as Docker

Passionate about technology with a strong record of delivering world-class technology in a tech-led space

Experience in working on multi-team, cross-functional Initiatives in engineering organisations of more than 25 engineers
