The General Lighthouse Authorities of the United Kingdom and Ireland (GLA) are world leaders in the provision of safety-critical marine aids-to-navigation.  The GLA consist of Trinity House (for England, Wales and the Channel Islands), The Northern Lighthouse Board (for Scotland and the Isle of Man) and the Commissioners of Irish Lights (for the whole of the Island of Ireland).  GLA Research and Development (GRAD) is a key area for us as we drive leading-edge projects of global significance in the marine environment comprising satellite and terrestrial radio navigation systems, alongside physical and visual signalling systems.

This is an exciting opportunity to join our internationally-renowned GRAD team working for, and on behalf of, all three GLA applying your skills and knowledge for the benefit and safety of all mariners.  You will work at our modern, waterside offices that offer good transport links to London and beyond.  There will also be some travel to GLA locations around the United Kingdom and Ireland, with some infrequent international travel.

Using our state-of-the-art research laboratories, you will undertake research and development, manage and deliver projects and conduct field trials.  We will encourage you to produce papers for, and present at, international and national conferences.  In the first instance, you will work in our Software Development and Computer Systems discipline, primarily on technologies and issues around the International Maritime Organisation's e-Navigation concept, but will over time, include the wider areas of the GRAD project portfolio.  You will have knowledge and experience in the application of a wide variety of current programming languages and of those now being developed, as well as a good working knowledge of systems engineering.  You will have experience in Service Oriented Architectures and knowledge of SQL database design and development, as well as also preferably possessing knowledge of e-Navigation and how it is currently being demonstrated and rolled out globally.

You will be highly numerate and an experienced programmer with a degree (2:1 preferred) in electronic engineering, computer systems engineering, software engineering, or similar.  You should have practical experience of the systems engineering lifecycle including requirements capture, design, development, implementation and testing, as well as experience in programming languages (preferably C#, Python, Java, or C++).  Ideally, you will also have experience in an engineering discipline.

You will have some industrial experience with experience of cyber-security issues, be adaptable, confident and enthusiastic with good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively (both written and orally) at all levels.  Good organisation and time management skills are essential, as are well-developed IT skills.  Project Management skills are also desirable.
