The Department of Psychology
The Department of Psychology is home to academic experts, dedicated professionals and the future of psychological research. The Department is situated on the Colchester campus in modern, purpose-built accommodation. It has rapidly expanded since being founded in 1991 to become a leading centre for research and education in Psychology in the UK.

We are now seeking an ambitious individual who will work with colleagues within the department as well as with staff across the Faculty of Science and Health. The successful candidate will join a small team of technicians providing technical support to academic staff, research staff and students.

Duties of the Role
The appointed candidate will work under the direction of the Chief Technician, providing comprehensive technical support for hardware and software within the Department of Psychology.

Duties will include providing guidance and technical support to students undertaking research projects, including the provision of basic training on specialist equipment; taking responsibility for installation and support of current and future research equipment and activities; and programming and the development of computer-based experiments.

Skills and Qualifications required
The successful candidate will hold a BTEC level 5 qualification or equivalent in Computer Electronics or have equivalent experience and will have a broad range of technical skills with experience of end-user support in a research and/or teaching environment.

Experience will span hardware and software installation and configuration and although it is not essential, it will be beneficial for you to have knowledge of at least one programming discipline (e.g. MATLAB, Python) and/or psychology experiment building tools (e.g. Inquisit, E-Prime).

You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team and must therefore possess excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a larger team.

At the University of Essex, internationalism is central to who we are and what we do. We are committed to being a cosmopolitan, internationally oriented university that is welcoming to staff and students from all countries and a university where you can find the world in one place.
