For any CIO or Head of IT or IP, there are both professional and personal rewards to every opportunity. When you consider the work the Ministry of Defence does to keep the UK secure and prosperous, there is an obvious personal satisfaction here. But equally, this role will position you as the focal point for over 3,000 tech-led military and civilian personnel. It is as complex as any in the discipline.

In essence, the challenge will be to ensure we have the skilled military and civilian information professionals to protect the nation. You will develop the strategy, establish and champion standards, and pinpoint future needs. And through it all, you will build stronger ties with other departments and make sure our resources are make the most of every synergy at hand.

This will call for close working with civilians, military staff and professional bodies, as you enhance our IT, KIM and Cyber Security and Digital capabilities. Plus, there will be time spent developing the structure of the profession - defining job families, outlining career paths, promoting learning opportunities and shaping succession plans.

With such a wide scope, it is vital that your senior IT or Cyber Security background has led to a deep understanding of all the roles under your remit. You will also bring a keen eye for emerging trends and intuitive understanding of their impact upon the workforce.

An astute strategist used to delivering discernible improvements to complex organisations, this is also a chance to flex your ability to lead large-scale change programmes end-to-end. Everywhere you go, you will bring the best out of those around you - influencing stakeholders and inspiring colleagues and external parties. And while it is not essential, any defence experience will always help.

There is a comprehensive package to look forward to. However, with a challenging brief set against such a compelling ultimate ambition, the role itself should be the real draw here.
