Mechanical Fitter

Are you looking to work within the manufacturing department of Small Boats, repairing a wide range of military specification small boats for both the Ministry of Defence and other military and commercial customers? We currently have a vacancy for a Mechanical Fitter at our site at the Portsmouth Naval Base.

As a Mechanical Fitter, you will be working alongside Shipwright / Boat Builders, Laminators and Electrical Fitters. The multi-skilled trades work closely together to undertake the individual boat work packages

This role will enable you to specialise within propulsion equipment including petrol/diesel and engines, water jets, out drives and outboard motors as well as hydraulic steering.

Your main responsibilities as a Mechanical Fitter will involve:

Mechanical competency to be measured at a minimum of 60% against MS Mechanical competencies

modelling across all areas

Integrating SHE activities into daily working. Carry out a Trade specific Take 5 plus 5 dynamic risk assessment before every task

Providing visible active commitment to SHE - leading by example, acting on SHE concerns

Removal, overhaul, repair, installation and testing of systems on a variety of mechanical equipment, machinery and systems

Carrying out planned and reactive maintenance, overhauling and repair, installations various types of Mechanical Equipment such as: Yanmar diesel engines, Hamilton water jets (and other variants), drive shafts, fluid systems, hydraulic systems (steering, directional control) rudders, valves, pumps and associated ancillary equipment

Carrying out detailed inspections and being fully conversant in the use of all measuring equipment

Diesel engine maintenance, strip down, overhaul and rebuild. Including: Injector removal/replacement. Compression testing, Coolers (removal, cleaning and testing Hydrostatic). Turbo charger removal and replacement. Fuel pump removal, engine timing. Top overhaul and major overhaul

Your skills and qualifications:

Fault diagnosis and defect rectification

Have completed either an appropriate trade apprentice or hold an equivalent qualification

Demonstrate strong SHE working practices

Able to read/interpret Mechanical Drawings

Have an understanding of project milestones
