Are you an experienced control and instrumentation engineer or senior engineer looking to develop your career in a technically varied and interesting environment? 

Would you enjoy the challenge of working with a wide range of C&I and data capture systems such as; discrete analogue and digital, SCADA and PLC based systems through to high performance FPGA systems? 

Can you imagine a source of electricity that is carbon free, with fuels reserves for millions of years and is inherently safe? This is not science fiction - this is Nuclear Fusion - the process that powers the Sun!  

You will be responsible for leading, supporting and delivering the specification, design, modification, procurement/construction, installation and commissioning of C&I systems for a range of projects.  

Key areas of responsibility will (depending on experience and level) include:  
-Leading or contributing to the design, implementation, commissioning and maintenance of hardware and software C&I for new and existing systems used on the Tokamaks and other programmes within UKAEA. 
-Delivering defined parts of a C&I system from initial design through to final commissioning.  
-Working with other team members to design and implement control, instrumentation and protection systems for existing and new plant. 
-Preparation of safety and plant documentation as well as supervising staff and contractors to support with this. 
-Leadership and supervision of staff and contractors to assist you with the above activities.  

The UK Atomic Energy Authority is one of the world`s leading fusion research laboratories and is seeking a range of experienced C&I Engineers to join the team. You will work within our Electrical Engineering Department, which participates in the design and implementation of systems for many new and exciting programmes across UKAEA, providing electrical and electronics services including control and instrumentation. The department undertakes both new build and refurbishment projects for UKAEA`s existing Tokamaks (JET and MAST-U).  

You will be expected to be flexible and willing to work with a range of technologies, software and circuit types from signal to power level, enhancing our ability to design, implement and deliver C&I and safety systems associated with the operation of facilities.

Knowledge skills and experience 

Essential 
-A degree or HND/HNC in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or a related discipline 
-Relevant professional experience in a C&I or electrical/electronic engineering role including C&I 
-Good interpersonal and communications skills, both written and oral are required. 
-A sound understanding of safe working practices. 

Additionally, for the higher level you will also be required to possess:  

-An honours degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering including computer science; or a related discipline, and relevant professional experience in a C&I role. OR an HND/HNC or equivalent qualification level, in an Electrical/Electronics discipline, with a greater breadth and depth of experience/knowledge.  
-Extensive experience of the control and instrumentation hardware and software, including SCADA and PLC programming for highly complex processes. 
-Experience of preparing safety documentation for the delivery of projects on site. 

Desirable 
-Knowledge of project engineering and contract management, or exposure to commercial processes with competitive tendering. 
-A practical approach combined with a good understanding of basic electrical/electronics engineering theory including the implementation and programming of control & instrumentation systems. 
-A working knowledge of IEC61131-3 programming languages would be advantageous.
