The Earth Observation groups at PML require a person to manage our Linux data landscape. The dedicated IT group at PML manage our server hardware and network connectivity, but we are looking for a knowledgeable, agile person to join our team to look after our data. We currently have a sizeable on-site data centre and we are in the planning stage of expanding this further with a ~£1m investment to move into Artificial Intelligence and machine learning with a cutting-edge GPU cluster. The volume of data that we manage is growing on a daily basis as we draw in raw satellite data from the EU's Copernicus programme and NASA satellites to produce Earth Observation data products, giving insights into the health of the worlds' oceans.
We have over 8PB of network storage presently and we download data using either our 2Gbps internet connection or direct satellite link. Analysis and interpretation of these data is continual, making use of the grid processing infrastructure - around 1,400 CPUs and 7TB RAM.
You will be responsible for:
Monitoring disk space usage across servers (8PB+) to ensure that there is sufficient free space for processing; migrating data where necessary to ensure the above.
Monitoring processing systems for failures
Investigating and fixing systems related failures
Ensuring project owners are aware of project specific issues
Specifying new hardware as required for data storage and processing
Liaising with the IT Group to purchase and build hardware
Creating and maintaining monitoring systems as required
To achieve this, you will have:
Good Linux systems knowledge, ideally with a few years of demonstrable experience
Shell scripting (Bash, Python, possibly Perl)
File system tuning skills
Postgres database management
Sun Grid Engine (or similar) tuning and support
If you can bring any of these skills too, this will strengthen your application:
Basic network debugging (ITG manage the core network)
Virtualisation technology (Ovirt, OpenStack)
Docker deployment and support.
Cloud computing knowledge and experience
The role is based in our office in Plymouth and offered with an open ended contract. This post is offered at Technologist level, with a salary up to £37,281, or at Senior Technologist level, with a salary up to £44,958, depending on experience. In addition, you will have a generous 30 days of annual leave plus 8 days of public holiday. The position advertised is a full-time role requiring 37 hours per week. We also operate a flexible working policy.
Closing date: Wednesday 10th July 2019
Interviews to be held on Thursday 25th and Friday 26th July 2019
