If so, we are seeking several materials database scientists to work on the cutting edge of nuclear materials research and development and to support the new National Fusion Technology Platform. The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) and is one of the world`s leading fusion research laboratories whereby our scientists and engineers are working with partners around the globe to develop fusion as a new source of clean energy.
The main purpose of the position is to lead implementation of a materials database and supporting infrastructure at UKAEA and integrate this system into wider system level codes and digital twin/in-silico designs.
Additionally, you will be responsible for:
-Establishing a database management system for the EUROfusion programme and the internal UKAEA programmes.
-Developing links of this database with wider systems at UKAEA, including but not limited to direct linkage of the database to computational modelling systems.
-Maintaining good practice across the organisation for data management and adopting cutting edge approaches to storage, scrutiny, provenance of materials data and methodologies to link databases to engineering models.
-Writing and submitting proposals to funding agencies.
-Collaboratively working with other departments and organisations outside of UKAEA.
-Line management responsibilities for members of the Technology Department assigned to the materials technology programme.

The UKAEA hosts and manages the JET nuclear fusion energy experiment on behalf of the EU and is also home to the UK`s MAST-U fusion energy experiment. UKAEA also works with industry and other third parties to develop new technologies currently in Remote Handling and Materials research. Following recent UK funding two new centres of excellence in tritium fuel handling and component testing and validation are being built. Knowledge, skills and experience
Essential
-Degree or higher in engineering, physics, computer or similar science, OR equivalent experience
-Demonstrable experience in implementation of specialist database management skills
-Engineering or materials science component to formal qualifications
-Demonstrable experience of supporting software development lifecycles
-Highly self-motivating and demonstrable initiative
-Capably of working in multidisciplinary teams and keeping self and others to deadlines
-Excellent verbal and written communication and diplomatic skills
Desirable
-Strong background in computer programming / coding (Python, C, etc.)
-Demonstrable experience of migrating database and linking database systems to modelling codes
-Knowledge base of/experience working with either: MatDB, GrantaMI or similar systems
-Experience with computational based engineering models, preferable surrounding "digital Twinning" or "in-silico Design"
-Knowledge base of /experience working with sensitive data and required assessments to ensure access rights and or encryption of data
-Experience of developing user interfaces for databases
-Knowledge and experience of preparing research proposals and/or project planning
-Ph.D. in computer / materials science or equivalent
-Knowledge base of /experience working with Finite Element Modelling system such as Ansys
-Experience of supervising, mentoring or training
