About the role

We are looking for an experienced and motivational Head of UX design to lead and manage the research and design of our global Enterprise Tools and services, which hundreds of thousands of our Colleagues and external Supplier Partners use every day to communicate and do business with Tesco.

This critical design leadership role will establish and lead a large, high-performing, multi-disciplinary design and research team, working as part of the digital product portfolio teams in Technology. Transforming and continually improving the user experience of global enterprise tools for users in line with their needs, product/business outcomes and key results, in a feasible and viable way for the business. Helping to make it simpler, more efficient and transparent to collaborate between Colleagues and our Supplier Partner base. To deliver mutually beneficial value to the business, our partners and, ultimately, to our millions of customers.

As a design leader, you will be passionate about delivering exceptional customer experiences and inspiring others to follow suit. You'll be a natural problem solver who is goal-oriented, innately creative and an excellent communicator and collaborator. Always being insights and data driven with extensive demonstrated experience of applying user centered design methods throughout the product discovery and delivery cycle.

You will be challenging user experience problems that impact our colleagues and supplier partners globally, pushing the boundaries of design whilst establishing best practices and delivering coherent and consistent end-to-end experiences across our Enterprise Tools and services. Identifying user needs and opportunities that help define and drive the enterprise tools product vision and strategy across the business. 

This exciting new role will be primarily based at our head office campus in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, with some time to be spent at our Farringdon, London office and occasional travel to our Bengaluru, India campus.

You will be responsible for 

Build, lead, manage and nurture a large and high performing multi-disciplined team of UX and UI designers, researchers and experience design managers. Focused on driving, identifying and delivering the UX research and design that transforms and continually improves the enterprise tools and services user experiences, in line with agreed product/business outcomes and key results. From early strategic direction to post release validation and in the context of the end-to-end user experience. Ensuring the user experiences your team delivers are user needs driven, valuable and frictionless for our colleagues and suppliers.

Build trusted relationships through close collaboration with product, business and engineering leadership and stakeholders to help shape and define the product vision and strategy. Define and communicate the experience design strategy, in-line with the product/business vision and strategies based on agreed outcomes and credible roadmaps to release value incrementally. Communicate this across the business globally.

Own and establish the Enterprise digital design system that is consistent with Tesco's brand across global markets. Facilitating a consistent and coherent user experience across the wide breadth of teams who build and manage enterprise tools today. Setting the standard and making it simple for other teams to adhere to it even when this role doesn't control the design work of those tools.

Implement and support the UX team in the application and delivery of the most appropriate User Centred Design methods to problem solving throughout the product discovery and delivery lifecycle. Driving the team to understand, champion and build empathy for our end users evolving needs, expectations, motivations and behaviours. Provide the Research and Design to identify user needs, opportunities, evaluate and validate hypothesis and our design solutions. Deliver evidence based experiences that are user centric and support a coherent and compelling brand experience. Ensuring we're solving the right problems in the best way for our users and business, de-risking costly development.

Work with product leadership, engineering and programme teams to define and refine user-centred design product practice within an agile product environment, using dual track product discovery and delivery approach to product development. Driving the advancement of best practices in UX design by proactively sharing knowledge, insights and refined processes to ensure high quality deliverable and effective and efficient ways of working.

Manage, coach, mentor and conduct appraisals/performance assessments for team members by setting clear objectives and providing constructive feedback timely to ensure individuals are successful in meeting their objectives and career development goals.

Proactively share and communicate design expertise and knowledge across the business improve organisational understanding of the value and benefits of UX and improve business capability

You will need

Extensive experience in building, leading and managing high performing UX design teams working in a multi-disciplinary agile product development environment. Ideally for enterprise tools and services across multiple platforms and devices, including web and apps, within a mid-large sized corporation.

Deep experience of creating UX design vision and strategies and building engaging user experiences which solve user and business goals with elegant simplicity. Delivering value to the business and its users, in line with product strategy and to agreed outcomes and key results.

Expert practitioner experience in the field of UX and UI design and research, including application of wide variety of customer led design practices, including UX research, conceptual design, prototyping, detailed design and implementation.

Experience working with product and technology teams to deliver complex programmes across product portfolios.

Strong experience with data-driven design and usage data analysis.

Knowledge of relevant front-end processes, standards and libraries.

Excellent communication and storytelling skills. Ability to persuasively convey ideas via strong written, verbal communication and presentation skills to all levels of seniority and disciplines within the organization.

Ability to embrace change, lead from the front and forward plan within a constantly changing organisation.

While a formal degree is not a requirement, we expect an expert understanding of the various UX design disciplines and the underlying theory in areas of interaction design, usability, psychology, visual and information design, and human factors.
