The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) plays a vital role at the heart of UK life. The wide-ranging work we do to safeguard the natural environment; support the UK's world-leading food and farming industry; sustain a thriving rural economy; and engineer the nation's defences against natural threats and hazards impacts the lives of over 65 million people. Join us and you will be part of a department that protects the food people eat, the water they drink and the air they breathe.

The large-scale projects we take on impact on every member of society. With the scope to improve the lives of the nation - and develop your Business Analysis skills in the process - you will therefore:

Contribute to our understanding of user and business needs. Acting as the bridge between old business models and future ways of working, your analyses and critical assessments will ensure your colleagues are able to achieve their intended objectives.

Balance the needs of a number of projects, driving the required research and gathering business requirements. Conducting gap/impact analysis, you will determine what needs to change and the potential consequences of this.

Coordinate the work of systems analysis to ensure business needs are being translated into technical solutions within the agreed timescale.

Ensure your actions are fully auditable, by producing and assisting with the development of all documentation and frameworks. This will include everything from functional specifications to business cases.

Regardless of where within Defra you are placed, you will excel in the team if you are keen to learn and you can process complex information quickly. With outstanding communication and stakeholder management skills, you will have the ability to concisely capture stakeholder needs and convert these into an agreed schedule of requirements. You will have good problem-solving skills, complemented by the capacity to identify, document and analyse the various delivery options. Crucially, you will have the vision to integrate the project outputs into the business without disrupting the normal flow of activity.

Everyone in Defra is supported to develop their skills and capabilities. You will have access to learning and development with high-calibre providers, and support from mentors and coaches. We offer flexible working alongside a range of other policies and schemes to support your physical and emotional wellbeing. Our comprehensive benefits offer includes generous annual leave, a contributory pension, staff bonuses and recognition, volunteering days, childcare vouchers and other salary sacrifice options, and an employee discount scheme.

Fixed-term appointments for two-years.
