Job Introduction

BBC Wales’ Technology department delivers and supports the technical requirements of programme makers located at all our studio facilities across the country. This includes maintenance support, communications, project delivery and technical innovation. The team is based in Cardiff, but provides support for BBC Wales’ staff working in Wales and beyond.

Role Responsibility

Engineers may work as part of a team or work independently to maintain the required service. They will carry out engineering tasks that are complex and for which full technical information may not be available.

They should appreciate the technologies and systems which support BBC Wales’ production and transmission operations for TV and Radio. They will be required to work as a part of the engineering support team on current projects, dealing with operational support and faults.

They are required to repair faults quickly or to identify and implement alternate ways of providing programme requirements to overcome technical problems and maintain the continuity of work in the production area. In addition there may be occasions where you will be required to drive a pool/hire car to provide support at all/any BBC Wales’ sites/OBs where the individual holds a valid driving licence.

Are you the right candidate?

You’ll have broad technical knowledge, including an understanding of complex systems built from many separate components. Experience in supporting a wide range of broadcast and production technologies is essential, for example linear and non-linear edit systems, camera systems, audio and video recorders, studios, analogue and digital distribution and so forth.

You’ll have experience of supporting radio editing systems, (eg Radioman) as well as supporting radio studios and associated equipment. In addition, you’ll have a proven track record of supporting television studios, including a good working knowledge of cameras and wider studio infrastructure. A demonstrable understanding of transmission infrastructure will complement these skills.

Finally, you’ll be experienced in supporting a broad range of IT technology, and understand how broadcast technology is converging within this domain.
