Chief Mechanical Engineer - Plymouth

An exciting and challenging opportunity exists within a global engineering services business, with 35,000 employees. This particular department has a number of long term availability / capability contracts in complex weapons, pumps and services supported from their Devonport site.

The role includes supporting the ongoing development and expansion of the business to double our revenue to become a £500M per annum business, transforming our organisation so that it is fit for future challenges.

Many of these existing and new contracts have huge scope in terms of technical innovation and improvements. There are a number of opportunities, currently being explored, that will allow us to develop the Weapons and Pumps Centres of Excellence, a realistic aspiration.

The main responsibilities of the role is as follows:

The post holder, along with the technical team, will have overall control of the Weapons and HESS technical teams which are multi-disciplined. The role is predominantly a technical rather than managerial one. Where necessary with support of professional engineers in other disciplines, they will be responsible for conducting route cause analysis of defects and technical oversight of both factory based and in-service support activities including on Royal Naval platforms and establishments across a range of equipment's, including Phalanx Close In Weapon System, 4.5 inch Mk8 Naval Gun, Pumps etc.

The Post holder will be responsible for the following (with support from other disciplines):-

* Technical authority for all MoD Contracts held by DST (CWEW)

* Engineering governance for activities including design conducted within Weapons and HESS areas.

* Advising individual managers on the continual professional development of the engineering teams.

* Identifying and implementing design interventions to improve availability and exceed Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) on all availability contracts.

* To lead and influence customers

* To represent the company on various engineering and safety panels across a range of systems

* Setting high professional standards for the other functions in the Business, demonstrating an ability to communicate at all levels, both internally and externally, in a collaborative manner.

* The post holder will be expected to make key technical decisions and be technically accountable for all aspects of theirs and others work scope, making risk based decisions to benefit the overall activity.

* The post holder is expected to participate in technical support activities for Defence Systems Technology, recommending sound practical engineering solutions to emergent problems.

The successful candidate will display the following skills, experience and qualifications:

The post holder shall be a Chartered Engineer having an extensive experience in Mechanical Engineering, a large proportion of which has been gained in a detailed design capacity.

In addition the post holder will have a good general level of education to degree standard in a mechanical engineering discipline, and be technically competent possessing a depth of knowledge in most of the following areas:-

* Material science (ideally polymers in addition to metallurgy)

* Corrosion process and prevention in marine environments

* Fluid systems , HP Air & Hydraulics - ideally some knowledge of Fluid Dynamics

* Fluid pump technologies and sealing arrangements

* Control systems and dynamics (liaising with electronic system engineers)

* Manufacturing processes e.g. Welding, CNC Machining, fabrication etc.

* 3D CAD

* Finite Element Analysis

* Member or Fellow of IMechE, registered CEng

* Masters and/or BSc in Mechanical Engineering
