Share your software development knowledge for an exceptional career

From environmental protection and resource development to allowing sailors and the fishing industries to navigate the world’s waters safely, the marine geospatial information produced by the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) serves many sectors. Maintaining world-class standards, our teams enjoy the unique combination of working in a civil service role that is bolstered by commercial expectations - resulting in a dynamic atmosphere where ambition and ideas are welcomed. But more than that, our work directly impacts on the safety of the UK - thanks to the UK’s Navy being one of our key customers - while our information enables global trade efficiency. As such, this is a unique opportunity to join a team where your contribution will impact on society as a whole.

Joining our Agile Software Engineering team, you will be instrumental in helping us deliver software that is suited to the needs of our customers, responding quickly to their developing needs. Working with a wide range of stakeholders such as Architects and Product Owners to identify the future needs of the business and come up with innovative solutions, you will be at the forefront of shaping and designing new tools, frameworks, systems and components. Taking responsibility for mentoring and guiding the work of junior colleagues, you will be entrusted with the deliverables from one or more software development teams, plus you will oversee tasks such as code reviews, unit testing, ALM processes and source code management.

Leading from the front, you will use your own .Net development skills to inspire and teach junior colleagues. You will therefore need an exceptional knowledge of the .Net framework with the patience to impart your wisdom. Keen to share your understanding of design principles and patterns, you will also have the ability to craft good quality code in C#. To make the short-list for this role, you will have a broad range of commercial experience and your competence in providing technical leadership including the enforcement of quality practices will be assessed. A team-player with great communication and leadership skills, you will ideally have experience in some of the following: Automated unit and system testing, ASP .Net MVC, WPF, Xamarin, Team Foundation Server, Cloud platforms, e.g. Azure, VSTS.

This is a unique opportunity to do something great with your career. Our people are passionate about the important work they are doing, and they enjoy a supportive and collaborative team environment. So if you have the vision to see how we could improve the business, the people management skills to support your colleagues and you’d enjoy taking on some career-defining challenges, then get in touch today.
