The IT department at the University of Reading is going through a period of change. Currently combining a broad modernisation programme with a variety of detailed challenges, our work impacts on every department in the University. But more than just offering high calibre IT and digital services, our innovative technology options enable our academics to conduct world-changing research and high quality teaching. With 120 people in the department, we are therefore looking for an inspirational Director to oversee this important remit.

Taking responsibility for all IT and digital services, you will be entrusted with a far-reaching brief. From defining our IT strategy and corporate policies to accelerating improvements to our cyber security, you will turn your hand to a myriad of fascinating challenges. Many of these projects are already underway, such as our plans to unify communications that will replace the analogue telephone services, upgrading classroom equipment and the progressive web content management improvement which will enhance the capabilities of university staff. But that is just the tip of the iceberg. Acting as a role model to the team, you will build confidence among the ranks, helping them develop their skills. Furthermore, we want our IT provisions to be used in an effective way, so you will remain accessible to your colleagues, listening to the needs of all departments and developing a robust strategy that will turn words into action. From overseeing infrastructure services to developing major application systems, you will have the scope to push what we are truly capable of.

We are excited about the ideas you can bring to this role. We do not require you to come from an academic institution, but we will expect you to have stakeholder management experience in a senior IT leadership role within a large organisation. With great leadership and people management capabilities, you will have solid influencing skills and the ability to multi-task across all academic schools and several campuses. You will also have proven experience of managing complex projects or driving change, and an evident interest in HE. You will have a graduate level education, evidence of ongoing professional development and you will have an ITIL certification (Foundation level minimum). With good financial acumen, your understanding of procurement regulations and legalities of the IT sector will be second to none.

This is an undeniably desirable role. Located just outside the city centre, the University campus offers an enhanced working life, with a pleasant working environment set in an open space. We also offer a generous package that includes 26 days of holiday plus 6 University Closure days. But we appreciate that there is more to life than work, which is why Reading’s central location between Oxford and London makes it such an appealing option. With good schools and easy transport links across the country, there is something for everyone. So if you would be interested in playing a key role in the growth and development of our IT department, contribute to and on occasion lead major University initiatives, and you have the gravitas required to guide our enthusiastic team, then we would love to discuss this opportunity with you further.

The contact details of all applicants to this position will be shared with our external partner, TMP Worldwide.
