Senior Design Engineer - Engines

£35,000 - £45,000 dependant on experience + benefits

As a Senior Engine Design Engineer you will be responsible of a wide range of complex mechanical components from various sectors (Engines, Vehicles, Transmissions & Hybrids) for example light duty gasoline engines to off highway transmissions.

As a Senior Engine Design Engineer will work closely with the Chief Designer or Lead Designer to take ownership of a particular mechanical design system as identified by the Chief Designer or Engineering manager. Additionally, will assist the Engineering Manager in coaching other design engineers to develop skills and work to the department processes.

Key responsibilities:

- System and component specifications and that your design meets the requirements

- Creation of 2D drawings to allow manufacture or purchase

- Creation of assembly drawings and bill of materials

- Carry out design change requests as per process and in a timely manner

- Fit and function of their responsible parts or system and their interaction with other systems

- Layout drawings and standard part libraries are up to date

- Checking and validating design engineer's designs and drawings as required

- Guideline ownership if nominated by engineering manager

- CAD champion role if nominated by engineering manager

- Creation of component or system design plans

- Meeting design timing plans on assigned tasks

- Work closely with manufacturing and process engineers to ensure products are designed for manufacture & assembly

- Responsible for reporting progress of all assigned tasks to the project management teams, chief designer or engineering manager

- Creation of technical reports and documentation as required for engineering projects

- Highlights all mechanical technical risks to the chief designer or engineering manager

- Responsible for preparing and presenting mechanical designs at design reviews

- If required, generates minutes from design reviews

- Keeps up to date with and dissemination of: latest manufacturing techniques and drawing standards, latest technology trends, latest developments in design tools

- Liaise with suppliers and other Ricardo departments to ensure the required information is available when needed and customer requests are dealt with in a timely manner

- Liaise directly with the customer as required

- Follows departmental processes relating to management of designs (MDP)

- Ensures design files and documentation are kept up to date, and stored in accordance with department procedures

- Take responsibility for coaching and mentoring design engineer's in design techniques and departmental processes

- Identify any personal or mechanical design training needs to the engineering manager and help locate suitable courses

- Regularly review departmental design processes and identify any updates required

- Responsible for at least 2 sub-ordinates, guide their career path and carry out PDR's if required by the engineering manager

- Identify opportunities to innovate and suggest R&D topics for further study

- Promote best practice use of Windchill and contribute to its development

Experience/Qualification Required

- 4 years minimum, typically 5+ years of experience as a Design Engineer

- Broad range of mechanical design knowledge preferably with experience in one of the following areas: Engines, Transmission, Vehicle, Hybrids

- 3D CAD skills with two or more major CAD systems (e,g CREO, CATIA, NX)

- Competent user of Windchill PLM System

- Familiarity of technical specifications

- Leadership of small design teams (2 min)

- Ability to understand and produce technical drawings to high standard with GD&T competency

- Able to produce designs to specified deadlines and achieves required timescales

- Sets an example to other design engineers in the team on best practice performance

- Confident proactive character, ability to take the lead in challenging situations

- Good communication skills, dealing with other employees, external clients & suppliers
