This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity, and one that goes far beyond technology. It is a digital journey with significant implications for the future of the UK and the 65 million people living here. Join the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) as Deputy Director - Digital Delivery and you will deliver a large-scale programme that will transform the way this huge government department works and interacts with businesses and citizens.

At Defra, our responsibilities are large and wide-ranging. Our work is aimed at creating a cleaner, healthier environment, developing a world-leading food and farming industry, expanding a thriving rural economy and securing robust defences against natural threats and hazards across the UK. This exciting work will only increase in complexity as the nation moves closer to leaving the EU.

In this high-profile, time-critical role, you will manage a number of Digital Programme Leads in charge of a cluster of projects and programmes being driven by EU exit. These include International Trade, Essential Biosecurity, Future Farming Support, Chemicals and Pesticides, and Specialist Applications.

You will be responsible for key deliverables, dependencies and opportunities, as well as acting as a key focal point on the strategic position of projects and programmes. You will drive delivery, managing requirement uncertainty by using agile work methods, while taking the lead on effective financial control and building a collaborative and engaged working environment.

We are looking for excellent leadership and management skills, an in-depth knowledge of the principles underpinning modern digital service design, a thorough understanding of Agile and other methodologies, and a strong track record of delivering digital services - ideally with some experience of Government projects.

We aim to support the professional and personal wellbeing of everyone in Defra. Our benefits include generous annual leave, a contributory pension, staff bonuses and recognition, salary sacrifice benefit options, and an employee discount scheme. We also offer flexible working and a variety of learning and development opportunities.
