Government and industry initiative aiming to transform the UK’s current overall aircraft and wing design capability has led to significant investment into aerospace research and development. The civil air transport industry is about to undergo a step-change to meet future economic, mobility and environmental challenges, and work done within these studentships aims to position Airbus and its partners at the forefront of this change by developing a rapid, world-beating wing design and integration capability. As part of this investment a position for a Research Fellow has been created within the School of Aerospace, Transport and Manufacturing (SATM) at Cranfield University, starting between January and February 2018.

Based within the Centre for Aeronautics you will be taking part in collaborative research within projects sponsored by Airbus and Rolls Royce to develop flight simulation technologies that will shape the next generation of civil aircraft. Your role will focus on the software development and enhancement of the flight simulators operated and used for real-time piloted demonstration of technologies developed at Cranfield. Your role within the projects will give you an excellent view of and opportunities for involvement in developing the latest simulation and experimental testing technologies. It is also an excellent opportunity to work in an industrially relevant environment supported by companies such as Airbus and Rolls Royce.

Applications are welcomed from candidates who have a PhD in Computer Science or Software Engineering (or close to completion), and a strong track record in software development, particularly in modelling and simulation of complex systems; such as aircraft. Experience in real-time simulation using MATLAB/Simulink and programming skills (especially in C/C++), with knowledge of mathematical modelling of aircraft/vehicle dynamics is also essential. Self-motivated individuals are sought with excellent communication skills and a flexible independent approach to research. Any experience in the fields of aerodynamics and flight mechanics, would be useful, but not essential. You should also enjoy working in an international team, seek an intellectual challenge, strive for excellence in research and, be ready to take on responsibility. Interviews will be held in January.
