About the role
The development of new technologies and practices in recent years has led to increasing amounts of personal data being stored in digital form. At the same time, cyber security incidents and technology-related failings have risen significantly and the need for organisations to apply robust data protection measures has never been more important.
The ICO is recruiting a number of technical specialists to investigate the rising numbers of information security breaches. You will therefore need to have demonstrable IT, computing and security skills and expertise in order to assess the technical description of events provided by data controllers and investigate where they may have failed in order to make correct recommendations for possible enforcement action. You will need up-to-date and in-depth knowledge of IT systems and computing fundamentals.
You’ll also share your expertise with non-technical experts across the Enforcement department, including in live data incidents, and will need to be able to explain complex technical subjects clearly and understandably. In addition, you’ll identify trends and emerging information security risks that may impact on information rights.
The Lead Technical Investigations Officer will work within the Civil Investigations team in the Enforcement department. The team is responsible for investigating serious breaches of the Data Protection Act 1998 and for taking regulatory action where appropriate, which can include the service of Civil Monetary Penalties of up to £500,000.
About you
As well as a degree, equivalent qualification or relevant work experience, you’ll need to be an excellent communicator. Your judgement, intellect and initiative will give you the ability to handle your casework autonomously and confidently. You will also need a good understanding of information security and experience of conducting investigations, as well as a passion for ensuring that organisations are keeping pace with technological advancements.
