We’ve launched First Utility in 2008 to be a better kind of energy company and we now continue to do so, operating as a wholly owned subsidiary group of the Shell Petroleum Company Limited (Shell). We currently serve approximately 825,000 homes, actively investing in innovation in order to develop bright solutions to reform and revitalise the energy markets and best serve our customers.
Our talented people are integral to our journey. As we continue to grow and expand our team, we now have office locations in Coventry, London, Krakow and Hamburg.

Tech is at our core and the work of our talented tech teams helps to differentiate us from our competitors and improve customer experience. Current projects include the development of a new platform to support customers with the SMART meter roll out and continuing to improve our chat bot function. As the first provider to launch this feature, which handles roughly 9,000 chats a day, we will be using machine learning to drive this forward.

Agile working is something we do well, especially with our tech teams. There are many collaboration spaces around the building, with booths, screens, whiteboards and more. We also operate guild groups, which are a chance for colleagues across the different platforms to get together and knowledge share.
Our employees enjoy 12 research days a year, which can be driven by individual interests and/or the teams need. There is also the opportunity to attend conferences, which enables our people to invest time in learning the latest tech and innovation. Our monthly tech meet ups are a big hit, they’re a great way for people to get together socially to discuss the latest tech trends. We like to have a mix between internal departments or external guest speakers hosting the sessions.
