Liv-ex (The London International Vintners Exchange) operates the global marketplace for fine wine. We provide data, trading and settlement services to the majority of merchants in this field worldwide. Our goal is to make fine wine trading more transparent, efficient and safe for the benefit of our members and the market as a whole. As award winners in 2016 and 2017, our products are already achieving industry acclaim. With increased investment planned by Liv-ex in the coming years, an exciting vacancy has arisen in our Tech team for a Software Architect.

Summary Purpose

We’re looking for a Software Architect to join us on our journey to make our technology smarter and more adoptable for the market we serve. The Software Architect will be reporting to the Director of Operations and Technology to drive the technology strategy forward. A key goal will be to maximise the opportunities presented by our new technology stack while maintaining our legacy systems through to EOL. You will be working closely with the Product Team, Cloud Infrastructure Architect and our longstanding offshore engineering team to drive the business forward in a collaborative fashion.

The ideal candidate is someone with a proven track record in this field, who is looking to progress into a CTO/Director of Technology position in the next three to five years. You will act as engineering lead to ensure we evolve in tune with our strategy and ensure maximum productivity is achieved. This is a hands-on technical role with a balanced amount of technical and people management evolving over time.

Role Responsibilities

- Provide leadership and project management to our offshore software engineering team by directing and tracking team activities, and managing tasks and project schedules (For example, using Jira or scrum of scrums)

- Develop product strategy, grounded in an understanding of modern technologies, and take the lead in proof of concepts

- Stakeholder management: provide visibility, road maps and report metrics to the Executive Team

- Collaborate cross-organisationally to bring features to market: Liaise with operations, marketing, data and sales to manage all aspects of new product/feature launches

- Create scalable solutions that can drive the company’s technology forward across multiple countries.

- Build core technology and services to drive productivity and scale

- See initiatives through the software development lifecycle from specification, through implementation and testing, to final deployment and ongoing management/measurement through to EOL

- Deliver services across multiple software development frameworks (Java) and using key skills in Java-J2EE

- Motivate the team to write the best code, unit tests, and build and deploy scripts

- Troubleshooting and supporting production systems when required (New Relic) and assist with DevOps

- Lead sprint retrospectives and code reviews (Sonar)

- Monitor the backlog, sprint priorities and ensure maximum user story velocity is achieved

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential

- Significant software development experience (Java, Python, MySQL, NoSQL), with a good proportion of experience in leading development teams - keeping teams motivated, productive, and on-target, with the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects

- Good understanding of REST, Microservices, Containerisation (e.g. Docker)

- Knowledge and experience of architecting and implementing automated solutions using both open source and vendor specific technologies (CI/CD, GitHub, CloudBees, Jenkins)

- Proven experience of delivering production quality software and services

- A background on AWS infrastructure and services with a solid understanding of configuration management

- Commercially minded with a good balance between best practice and fit for purpose

- Good eye for detail, able to sense check and quality control output

- Experienced in structured software development with the ability to deliver software and services in an agile manner

- Quantitative skills to support our drive to data-driven decision making

- Ability to be ‘hands on’ and get stuck into the detail

- Ability to handle multiple competing priorities

- Ability to translate complex technical issues into small easily digestible chunks for non-tech people

- Be driven and hard-working with an informal work manner

- Ability to undertake international travel 3 - 4 times per year (approx. 1 week at a time).
