The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment Research Council, aims to undertake a world-class programme of scientific research, and to sustain for the UK an active and influential regional presence and a leadership role in Antarctic affairs. We are currently seeking a web systems developer to contribute to the development of a number of web-based data portals. These include making bio-acoustic data available as part of the Southern Ocean Network of Acoustics and providing discovery and access tools to datasets created as part of the NERC Arctic Research Programme.

We are seeking an enthusiastic software developer with skills in server-side and client-side development of web-based data systems. The work will be based on an existing data portal that has been developed using Laravel 5, PostgreSQL, Bootstrap and jQuery. The new systems will provide visualisation of data and metadata and will involve developing map-based interfaces to allow the discovery and download of data. The data portals will need to pull data in from external data services using API connections and, where appropriate, make some of our data available via APIs.

You should have experience with JavaScript frameworks, ideally jQuery, and be able to create responsive websites that will operate on a variety of devices. We use Geoserver and Openlayers for our web-mapping and you will be working primarily in PHP using Laravel 5 and PostgreSQL with PostGIS. Familiarity with Open Geospatial Consortium web mapping and feature services is important as well as a knowledge of the emerging Sensor Observation Service. We will be using standards based APIs wherever possible and demonstrable experience of working with a range of APIs would be beneficial. Experience in working with relational databases is essential while experience of spatial database extensions such as PostGIS is highly desirable. You should have experience of working in a team of developers, have a sound knowledge of software development practises, and be able to listen to, and communicate well with, end-users.
