About the job

We have an exciting opportunity to join our Network Services team in Companies House!  

We are looking for an experienced Senior Network Engineer to provide vital network services to Companies House. You will be responsible for both day-to-day support of the network infrastructure and strategic and tactical enhancements. These include the migration of core services to the cloud (AWS & Azure) and on-premise upgrades to the network technology. 

You will be part of a small network team that supports both on-site and cloud-hosted network services on a 24/7/365 basis (this includes participating in an on-call rota). In addition, you will be expected to work with colleagues to deliver infrastructure improvements to the existing LAN and WAN infrastructure.

Responsibilities 

The responsibilities for the role includes:  

  • Member of the Network Team which provides 24/7/365 technical maintenance and support for the Companies House Network. This includes participating in an on-call rota.  Details can be discussed in more detail but would be on average once every 5 weeks, depending on team availability and business needs.  
  • Assisting with the implementation of the cloud (AWS & Azure) network infrastructure required to host all CH systems which are in the process of being migrated from on-premise to the cloud. 
  • Implementing technical improvements and upgrades to the network infrastructure. 

About us  

The Network Team is part of the IT Services Team which sits in the Digital and Technology Directorate. The Directorate has over 200 internal staff who are supplemented by external contractors and third-party resources as necessary.  

The IT Services Team is responsible for day-to-day support and maintaining the availability of all IT services within the organisation including both the customer-facing systems used by the public and the internal systems used by staff.

Person specification

We are looking for the following experience, which will be assessed at sift and at interview. Please address these bullet points below when writing your personal statement (excluding behaviours).  

We are looking for individuals with:  

  • A high level of technical skills as outlined below 
  • The drive and enthusiasm to support the network 
  • Experience of delivering network infrastructure upgrades 
  • Self-motivation and confidence in engaging with end users at all levels across the organisation 
  • The ability to be an excellent team player who is willing to work closely with colleagues both within the immediate Network team and the wider IT Services team in order to resolve any service-affecting incidents that arise 
  • Experience of working within a 24/7 support environment 

We are looking for knowledge and experience in the following technologies:  

  • Cloud environments specifically AWS and Azure e.g. Transit Gateway, Azure Firewall 
  • Network security in on-premise and cloud environments including firewall technologies (traditional layer3/4 and WAF) and DDoS 
  • Layer 2 and layer 3 switched and routed networks, preferably using Cisco hardware 
  • Routing protocols, in particular EIGRP and BGP 
  • Configuration and management of remote access technologies e.g. Cisco VPN 
  • Wireless LANs preferably using Cisco APs and WLCs 
  • WAN technologies ideally MPLS and IPSEC VPN 
  • Network management tools such as WhatsUp Gold and Cisco Prime/DNA Center 
  • Ideally certified in Cisco technologies or working towards qualification
