About the role The Welding Design Department supports the repair and maintenance activities on the Royal Navy's Warships and Submarines at Devonport Royal Dockyard. The Welding Engineering team consists of 7 Welding Engineers who provide subject matter expertise to project and production teams. Welding Design works alongside the Non-Destructive Testing and Welding Compliance Section to ensure the management of a high quality welding.

We're currently looking for a Principal Welding Engineer to lead the team in developing the welding engineer capabilities of the department. Day to day welding engineering tasks to support production activities and external customers, which will include managing and leading up to 8 Welding Engineers.

Providing direction and technical judgement on Welding Engineering projects. Working in conjunction with Babcock's Weld Quality Management System (ISO3834-2) to ensure quality practises are abided by. The authoring and reviewing technical engineering reports/proposals for bespoke welding techniques utilising materials knowledge. Reviewing and approval of sub-contractor's quality system. Providing suitable feedback to sub-contractors on their work.

Areas currently being developed include the application of Engineering Critical Assessment and increasing the use of mechanised welding.

The Welding Engineering team interact with many areas of the wider business interpreting welding related problems and working together to share knowledge and increase the expertise of the department.

What do I need to do the role? The candidate will have a minimum of a Masters qualification in a relevant engineering discipline. They must have an understanding of welding processes and techniques. They will have a high degree of computer literacy; experience in using engineering software would be an advantage. Their experience must demonstrate a working knowledge of submarines / surface ships in both structural applications and pipe systems.

What else do I need to know? * The applicant must be a British National and be capable of holding NNPI, PSA and Atomic security clearances. * Chartered Engineer Status. Applicants who have a CEng application accepted by a relevant Engineering Institute will be considered. * Minimum requirement for the role is having achieved a master's degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
