If you enjoy leading and coordinating large technical projects and have significant experience in software engineering, this is an exciting opportunity to play a key role supporting the digital transformation of the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO).

About the UKHO

UKHO is an executive agency, sponsored by the Ministry of Defence. We work with a wide range of data partners to chart the world's oceans in order to develop and serve world leading software and data solutions to commercial shipping companies, navies and maritime organisations. Our products ensure safe navigation and global trade efficiency and support other marine activities including economic development, environmental protection, resource exploration and utilisation, scientific research and security and defence.

The role

In this role, you will be the technical lead for several highly capable software engineering teams, both internal and external to the UKHO and will have a key stake in defining and building our core infrastructure; particularly our data platform. You will actively work on developing the system, leading the technical work and work closely with other technical stakeholders to ensure the coordination of related activities across the organisation. The role also has responsibility to ensure the technical quality of outsourced development activities.

What we are looking for

This is a hands-on technical role which requires detailed knowledge of software development and the technologies involved, but also the leadership skills to guide work across more than one team and ensure we have a coherent tech estate. It also requires the ability to manage relationships with external suppliers and control the quality of their work.

A key requirement is to bring the best of modern software engineering to this expanding project, therefore significant experience in building large scale production systems will be crucial. Solid technical experience across software engineering technologies / practices, digital delivery and good leadership experience in technical areas are also essential.

If you feel you have the skills and experience to deliver complex software engineering projects for a leading government organisation, which is intent on transformation, where you will be empowered to deliver, we would be delighted to hear from you.

And in return?

We offer a great work / life balance. Employees' start and end times are built around their own preferences. We're all set up for working from home and encourage people to make use of this if they prefer. We are committed to providing part time options and reasonable accommodations and will work with you to meet your needs. There are great opportunities for self-development including Pluralsight/O'Reilly, cloud credits and training courses. We have a great investment in our community, with regular software community meetups and a network of guilds to join across a variety of subjects.
