The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is responsible for managing a wide range of issues that profoundly impact on the lives of millions of people all across the UK. What marks us out is our commitment to safeguarding the natural environment, supporting our world-leading food and farming industry, sustaining a thriving rural economy and engineering the nation’s defences against natural threats and hazards. Join us and you will be part of a department with one, single-minded vision: to create a great place for living. Not only that, you’ll be a member of a group dedicated to promoting inclusiveness, valuing diversity and making sure everyone has access to career-defining opportunities, whatever their background.

As a Senior Statistician, you will deliver a wide range of statistical work on behalf of Defra’s Food Chain directorate. This is an exciting time to join the directorate, as it focuses on matters of change and continuity surrounding the UK’s exit from the EU. The goal is to ensure the continued supply of affordable, high quality, authentic food to consumers, while supporting the UK’s important agri-food industry to grow both domestically and internationally. You will:

Work proactively with colleagues, sharing your knowledge and advising on the suitability of diverse data sources

Help colleagues, including Policy professionals, to understand the value of a strong evidence base

Influence the design of initiatives to facilitate robust data collection

Anticipate potential future changes to statistical products and respond accordingly

Engage early and often with diverse customers, to share analytical results, discuss findings and influence important decisions

We expect you to have strong stakeholder management skills, with a collaborative approach. Experience of building and engaging with a diverse network of contacts is advantageous. A flair for analysis equips you to evaluate products and draw out areas for improvement.

Everyone in Defra is supported to develop their skills and capabilities. So you will have access to learning and development with world-class providers through the Civil Service Learning site, and support from mentors and coaches. We also have various measures in place to support your physical and emotional wellbeing, including the opportunity for flexible working. Meanwhile, our comprehensive benefits offering includes generous annual leave, a contributory pension, staff bonuses and recognition, volunteering days, childcare vouchers and other salary sacrifice options, and an employee discount scheme.

Closing date: 6 May 2018.
