We are looking for a talented and highly motivated data scientist/ bioinformatician to be part of the Teichmann's lab research, aiming to understand the functions of the human body at the single cell level. Recent technological advances have meant that we can now profile large number of cells at the single cell level, generating very large genomics data sets which can be mined for exciting new insights into how the immune system and the human body works.

The Teichmann group is based at the Sanger Institute, Hinxton. Our laboratory comprises an international, collaborative team of both experimental and computational scientists. Our computational team applies existing bioinformatics packages to interpret our data and also develops new tools that are able to cope with challenges arising from newly developed single cell genomics techniques. The Teichmann lab has been at the forefront of this fast-moving field, making significant contributions in providing computational tools and gaining insights into immunology, with a particular emphasis in T cell biology.

In our laboratory, you will work closely with scientists from within the Teichmann lab, as well as the Human Cell Atlas team, whose ultimate aim is to characterise every cell type in the human body as a reference for future study and treatment of diseases. There are also close interactions with members of the European Bioinformatics Institute which is also based at the Wellcome Genome Campus.

As part of Teichmann lab, you will bring your bioinformatics or data science expertise to implement computational projects, set up data bases to store experimental data and meta data used by the lab and maintain these systems. This may include the setting up of web interfaces for external users of the data. You will run and maintain the internal IT services (software, databases, websites), with an opportunity to improve the existing IT systems where required. The requirements of the lab stretch from support in laboratory automation, to lab tracking, data processing and visualization. On a day-to-day basis, you will support researcher to facilitate storage, access and security of experimental data.

We are looking for a person, who enjoys team work and interacts well with others, ranging from collaborating clinicians and scientists, to post-docs, students and research assistants. Good communications skills will also be required to represent the group on relevant committees and potentially externally at conferences and meetings.

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute operates at the forefront of genomics, sequencing and analyses targeting a wide range of genomes from single cell pathogens to higher vertebrates, with an emphasis on genomes relevant to human medicine and welfare (http://www.sanger.ac.uk). The Teichmann lab is part of the Cellular Genetics division, with particular strengths in single cell genomics and computations analysis. The Human Cell Atlas is a new initiative, spanning many laboratories across the world. The Sanger Centre will be a key player in delivering this exciting project.
