We are seeking an experienced Specialist SQL Engineer to provide specialist administration and support to PHE’s database and web services.

You will undertake day to day administration of the SQL environment and will also run Microsoft Windows failover clustering, SQL permission models, simple and full recovery models, backups and restores, recovery of corrupt databases and SQL Server security standards. SQL monitoring and PowerShell scripting experience would be an advantage.

You will provide system expertise to other colleagues and support with administering the following technologies:

Microsoft SQL Server - versions 2008 to 2016, including clustered and HA systems

Microsoft IIS Server - versions 6 onwards, including web farms

Although you are primarily an administrator of the systems, development skills will are an additional advantage.

It would also be really useful if you have some knowledge of Microsoft Sharepoint Server - versions 2010 to 2016, SharePoint online and Ivanti LanDesk Service Desk, but none of these are essential.

If you can set standards for consistent high quality in technical execution and delivery and provide support, coaching and oversight to others to ensure that these are met, then we would like to hear from you.

We are looking for...

You will be:

A highly skilled SQL engineer, with IIS experience, who can demonstrate in-depth experience and advanced knowledge in the administration of one or more of the above technologies in order to support the delivery of technical excellence in a small and busy team.

A motivated self-starter, who takes pride in the quality of your work.

Happy working on your own or as part of a team and able to contribute to the wider ICT community.

You will be able to demonstrate an ongoing commitment to delivering excellent customer service and be skilled in managing and delivering change. You will show great problem solving skills and the tenacity to work on an issue until it is resolved. Your professional approach to tasks and deadlines means you are able to accommodate changes in priorities and respond to user needs as they arise.

We expect great technical skill, but we will complement this by providing training and support in areas specific to PHE and by supporting your personal development.

As the remit of the organisation is to protect the health of the public, which is a 24x7 requirement, you may also be required to participate in an out-of-hours support rota which provides support cover for ICT emergencies, ensuring, in particular, that the services for which you are responsible meet the service delivery criteria. Much of this work is undertaken remotely, so can fit in with family responsibilities.

Applicants are strongly advised to use the criteria in the person specification (available online) as sub-headings in their application to make it clear how they meet each of the selection criteria. Please also see job description for competencies

Public Health England promotes diversity in the workplace and is an equal opportunities employer. We would particularly welcome female applicants, as they are currently under-represented within PHE ICT.
