At the Department for Transport (DfT) we keep the UK moving. By working with agencies and partners we support the delivery of a transport network that ensures people and goods can travel around the country. Our aim is to ensure every journey is safe, clean, and fast whilst also establishing ways we can build the capacity we need for the future.

There are many challenges we have to overcome to make this happen, and the ever-present threat of international terrorism is high on our agenda. At the DfT we play an integral role in the Government’s overall counter-terrorism strategy, and as a Transport Security Inspector you will be crucial in our work to protect maritime and rail infrastructure, the travelling public and employees from terrorism. You will play a key role in ensuring that we have the highest standards of security on our transport systems so they can be used with confidence by everyone.

Across the UK, you will undertake observations, inspections, audits and tests of this infrastructure as part of a risk-based programme of compliance activity. The intent will be to assess industry compliance with security requirements set by DfT and improve them where appropriate. Fundamental in achieving this will be liaising with representatives of the rail and maritime industries during on-site visits, and proactively providing management and staff with advice, best practice solutions and constructive feedback. You will also be required to record the outcome of your visits on a database in a timely fashion, write up reports, meeting notes and produce official letters to stakeholders.

The nature of the work means you need excellent diplomacy and relationship building skills, to be confident leading and making decisions, have well developed communication skills and have the ability to deliver results quickly, with light supervision and often under pressure. Experience of working in regulatory role and of protective security measures is desirable but not essential.

Finally, you will need to be flexible with your approach to work. As the remit of this role covers the whole of the UK, you need to be willing to travel, to spend time away from home on a weekly basis and to occasionally travel abroad. A full driving license is required.

In addition to having a real impact on people’s lives across the country, you will benefit from our ongoing support to your professional development through investment in skills. You will also enjoy an excellent Civil Service benefits package.
