Why work in Technology at the Met Office
It’s an incredibly exciting time to work in Technology here at the Met Office. Our supercomputer can do more than 1000 trillion calculations per second and has enough power to take in hundreds of thousands of global weather observations and run atmospheric models containing more than a million lines of code. We’re also working closely with high profile organisations like Google, NASA, IBM, Cisco, and VMware to optimise our game-changing capabilities and develop even more innovative ways to meet the diverse needs of our customers and protect people across the world.
About the role
Our weather prediction models are the foundations of products and services that millions of people and organisations rely on, all over the world. Having recently invested in one of the world’s most powerful supercomputers, we will have access to more incredible data than ever before. The Meteorological Database (MetDB) stores all the global observational data used for ingestion by the atmospheric models which are used to produce the weather forecasts that we rely on each day. The Table Driven Codes (TDC-edi) is a Java application supported by the MetDB team. It is used to convert data between different formats to standardise the format of data stored in the Met Office and also to convert data to formats used by our partners and customers.
As Senior Software Developer, you’ll contribute to a business-crucial system that is of huge importance to the Met Office. You’ll be involved in the entire software development lifecycle as well as support of the MetDB and TDC-edi systems. As well as writing code, you’ll play a pivotal role in identifying and driving improvements to the system’s capability and usability. From capturing requirements, design and development to rolling out software, you’ll take on a variety of challenges and deliver impressive solutions that meet customer requirements, in a timely manner. Ultimately, you’ll be part of a team whose work is vital to the continued business success of the Met Office.
