City Design

The City Design Group is an award winning multidisciplinary design unit. We provide an urban design, public realm design, engineering design, historic environment, and public art service as part of the integrated services of the Place Directorate. Our aim is to build better lives in better places.

Our work includes providing design advice on major development and infrastructure schemes, preparing preliminary and detailed designs and managing the delivery of projects on the ground. We work across the city with a wide range of project partners, stakeholders and local communities. Bristol is a distinctive city, it has a wealth of historic environments and heritage assets, parks and open spaces, varied topography and vibrant neighbourhoods. It has a growing reputation for looking at urbanism differently. Bristol is European Green Capital, 2015.

These vacancies are in the Engineering Design Team. This is one of three teams in the City Design Group and comprises up to 39 technical staff providing a range of design services to client teams within the council and to external clients. A major part of our workload relates to highway infrastructure, helping to shape and improve the quality of our urban environment.

There is an impressive range of projects that you would be involved with. These include highway and public transport infrastructure for high profile projects included in the MetroBus Network, the Temple Quarter Enterprise Zone, and Local Sustainable Transport and Cycling Ambition funded programmes. Our portfolio also includes Residents Parking, and infrastructure associated with safety, education, capital investment, green streets, SUDs related schemes and other initiatives involving the public sector.

Working under the management of a Principal Engineer or project Engineer, the role includes developing and drawing up design proposals, collecting and preparing site information, working in teams on larger projects whilst also having the opportunity to take projects through from inception to supervising the works on site ensuring they are delivered safely and to programme and budget. An opportunity for you to develop your career and work towards becoming an Incorporated Engineer.

We are looking for skilled engineering designers with experience of taking projects through from initial brief to completion. You will have experience of developing projects, preparing designs, obtaining the necessary approvals, developing contract documents and/or managing of construction on site.

You will already have a significant grounding in civil engineering, preferably membership of a recognised professional institute (ICE, CIHT or IHE), but certainly a strong evidenced desire for continuing professional development. You will know how to manage your work to ensure that deadlines are met. You will have the skills and experience to successfully collaborate with a wide range of professional disciplines. You will have an ability to communicate effectively and to a high standard through visual, written and verbal presentation and will have well developed IT skills. You will be able to work well in a team.
