You've signed into the online job boards, looking for something new, something exciting that might solve the issue you are currently having - that issue being that you fancy a new challenge. But you've noticed this job ad and your immediate thoughts are as follows...

"What is this recruiter on about! - he wants a Technical Director and Development Lead? That is 2 different jobs! He must be the type of recruiter who thinks Java and JavaScript are the same thing. Or the type of recruiter who thinks Agile is a programming language!".

Well... if you do think that then I don't blame you. Well, the first part anyway.

This is admittedly a 'hybrid' role and the job title is vague, but i dont want that to put you off. Rather, I'd ask you to take 2 minutes to read through the rest of this ad as this might end up being something that really grabs your attention...

I have partnered up with one of my longest-standing clients as they continue to revamp their software engineering function by hiring an experienced Software Developer with a hybrid skillset who can come and step into a Technical Director role. The company in question are a leading Software House & Tech Consultancy with a well established customer base and a reputation for delivering high quality software both in the UK and further afield.

The role itself is different to that of your typical 'Technical Director' with the main reason being how hands on it actually is. Now don't get me wrong, there is a huge strategic element to the role and you will be given a lot of creative control and/or autonomy. However, the roles' core focus will be the delivery of a large-scale technology workstream (covering a range of technologies including .NET Core, Azure, AWS and DevOps), so a strong understanding of software engineering and a background working closely with the technology is therefore crucial.

In terms of specific focus areas, the core elements I am seeking when screening applicants is experience in the following key disciplines:

Software Development & Architecture - First and foremost, this role is extremely technical with the idea being that you will be the most senior person within their engineering function. This role will essentially sit between Technical Lead and CTO, with a focus on high-level programming, technical architecture and working with key technologies including Microsoft (.NET Core, C#, MVC), cloud (Azure, AWS) and web (React, Angular, Vue). Moreover, any experience with mobile development technologies would also be a huge bonus.

Technical Leadership & Strategy - A key focus of this role will be getting involved in high-level technical leadership, creating and implementing a new set of coding standards and driving the use of modern software principles such as Agile, Scrum, TDD and DevOps. This role will also involve getting involved in the delivery of a large technical change programme aimed at re-vamping the services/solutions delivered to customers as well as improving the organisation's internal practices. A background working as either a Technical Lead or Lead Engineer is therefore key to be considered for this role.

Stakeholder Management & Consultancy - Due to the nature of this organisation, your role will naturally have a customer-facing element and you will essentially be the go-to technical escalation point for their key client projects. You will work closely with both internal and external stakeholders so strong communciation skills and the ability to influence/negotiate is a huge factor.

But ultimately, they are looking for a passionate technologist who wants to get involved in all things R&D, working with emerging technologies and helping shape the software engineering function for years to come.
