Functional Safety Engineer

Successful applicants will be required to work as part of team on engineers, supporting development of our products in the field of automotive functional safety. The role includes creating the safety case for the product including defining the systems, software and hardware concept and requirements; performing, supporting and monitoring all activities related to safety related engineering; working as part of a development team to analyse, verify and validate the product according to the safety concept.

The Functional Safety Engineers are required to possess a degree of self-discipline and initiative that will allow them to work unaided, solving engineering problems that are required by the position. The position requires adherence to very rigorous processes and a strong attention to detail. Ideally the candidates will have a passion for safety related engineering.

Job role:

1 Ensuring product development is performed in compliance to relevant safety standards

2 Working with the project manager and development team to define, plan and execute all safety activities to the requirements of the functional safety standards

3 Creation, documenting and maintenance of project safety plans and safety concepts accordingly to the functional safety standards

4 Peer reviewing and approving safety related work products according to the rest of the development team

5 Lead and taking part in safety related engineering activities as FTA, FMEA, FMEDA and FMECA to verify product according to the required safety integrity level

6 Leading and support requirements engineering activities to ensure all safety related requirements are tracked from safety concept to implementation and to verification and validation work products

7 Perform internal audits on safety related products

8 Supporting safety related problems identified on serial production product, including analysis, defining and implementing engineering solutions and working with project managers to define and execute any contingency plan

9 Work with external safety certification bodies to review and refine the safety plans and safety concepts where required by the safety assessment audit plan

10 Keep to date with all latest revisions of relevant safety standards

11 Promoting internal safety culture on safety related product development and across the organisation

12 Creating, maintaining and reviewing processes relating to safety related engineering activities

13 Enhance, nourish and sustain safety culture across the organisation

14 Work to company quality standards.

Must have experience and skills in ALL of these areas below:

1 Experience in the role of Safety Manager in safety related projects.

2 Strong experience with the automotive functional safety standard ISO26262

3 Experience working with Automotive SPICE (ASPICE), development framework, ISO12207 or CMMi model for systems and software development

4 Experience in engineering analysis techniques such as HARA,FTA,FMEA, etc

5 Experience in the development of automotive products utilising electronics and embedded software

6 Experience in requirements management, traceability, verification and validation

7 Creation and maintaining of safety plans and safety cases

8 Auditing safety related work products according to the requirements of ISO26262 and other relevant standards.

Desirable experience and skills:

1 Functional safety experience to other industry standards such as IEC61508, DO178B or similar

2 Experience with high level automotive CAN protocols, especially UDS-on-CAN,OBDE, and J1939

3 AUTOSAR

4 UML

5 Experience working with other vehicle technologies, especially CAN FD, FlexRAY, and vehicle ethernet

6 Experience working with automotive OEM or other tier 1 automotive suppliers

7 Practical knowledge of automotive and similar technologies, including motor inverters, automotive electronics and topologies and CAN protocols, UDS, XCP, CANopen, J1939 OBDII

8 Experience with CASE tools, such as requirements management tools, systems and software design tools, analysis tools

1 Enthusiastic, flexible and keen approach to learning, etc.

2 Structured individual with good problem solving skills

3 Excellent communication skills and able to deal with all levels of the organisation

4 Ability to work well under pressure and prioritise work accordingly

5 Comfortable in customer facing role, confident, thoughtful

6 Must be able to work alone with minimum guidance, but also be able to operate effectively as part of a team

7 Flexibility to travel in UK and overseas

Qualifications required:

1 Qualified to degree level (2:1) in appropriate engineering discipline such as Automotive Engineering, Safety Engineering, Computer Science or Systems Engineering or equivalent
