A great opportunity has now arisen for a Network Engineer to join the IT Team.

Salary

Band 5 - In the range of £35,222 to £38,254 per annum. Band 6 - In the range of £28,200 to £30,600 per annum.

Purpose

To provide the focus for Network architecture at BAS. Working as part of the IT Team to ensure our Infrastructure meets the needs of BAS and maintains the Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability of data. (Band 5)

The Network Engineer will manage and support the computer network and associated systems across BAS; including telephony, satellite and firewalls. (Band 6)

Qualification

Relevant IT qualification. This could be either a degree or equivalent relevant experience.Other qualifications could include, eg CCNA, Network+

Duties

- Provide strategic guidance on networking architecture ensuring our infrastructure is secure and meets the needs of BAS. (Band 5).

- Manage and ensure the reliable, efficient and effective operation of the local and wide area network in Cambridge, Antarctica and ships and associated systems including, but not limited to, mobile and fixed telephony. (Band 6).

- Maintain and regularly review all the associated network active equipment, telephony hardware and software systems including application of upgrades, new systems/services and enhancements. (Band 6).

- Undertake and lead on network projects to complete specific tasks. Projects may include major hardware/software upgrades or commissioning of complex applications. (Band 5).

- Act as one of the points of contact within BAS for security incidents. (Band 5).

- Work across IT platforms and communication systems to provide security guidance as new platforms are introduced. (Band 5).

- Attend meetings as required including events within BAS and NERC. Represent BAS at IT forums. (Band5).

- Proactively monitor the network and telephony system performance, including the satellite links to Antarctica and the ships. (Band 6)

- To keep abreast of emerging technologies and sharing knowledge with colleagues. (Band 6).

- Plan ahead for future system upgrades to ensure all hardware is kept in serviceable life. Liaise with team leads to ensure all requests for future hardware are known, in advance, to allow for budget bidding to take place. (Band 6).

- To respond to users’ support tickets and resolve issues promptly, and within defined SLA’s. (Band 6).

- Partake in developing and communicating the strategic direction of the department. (Band 5).

- Undertake other duties as appropriate as requested by the BAS Director and/or within the BAS IT department.(Band 6).
