Manufacturing Engineer - Design for Manufacture

Salary: Paying up to £60,000

Buckinghamshire, South East England

I am looking for a Design for Manufacturing Engineer. The role is for a Mechanical Engineer to embed Design for Manufacture principles into our new part introduction process. Role will report to the Head of Manufacturing Engineering and NPI Continuous improvement Lead.

As the Design for Manufacturing Engineer your skills and qualifications will ideally include:

· Awareness of Aerospace manufacturing requirements and processes.

· Good project management skills and the ability to handle multiple calls on your time.

· Good Manufacturing / Mechanical skills such as reading drawings, raising investigation reports, interpreting material specifications, etc.

· Awareness of different manufacturing processes: such as manual assembly, product testing, machining, casting, pick and place assembly, mouldings. Ability to understand the different drivers for differing manufacturing methods - for example machining from solid versus casting.

· Ability to work with different functions and suppliers to understand their preferences and requirements so that an optimum cost model can be developed. There will be trades (i.e. compromises) but they need to be justified.

· Ability to work with models and designs that are not fully complete, and the ability to define definition preferences.

· A working knowledge of SolidWorks would be an advantage, especially with Composer.

As the Design for Manufacturing Engineer your main responsibilities will involve:

· Owning the unit cost models for newly designed parts for the Operations function. Capturing any changes to the cost model in terms of both Unit Costs and Operational Assumptions - for example design changes or volume changes - so that traceability can be understood easily during the design process.

· Working with our supply chain (internal and external) to review designs in progress so that the best cost model decision can be made based on the data provided - for example balancing higher tooling costs with lower unit against lower tooling costs with higher unit costs for different volume scenarios. Providing break-points for the above scenarios and feeding any capital requirements into the departmental / project budgets.

· Capturing operational best practice / preferences and developing cost models to allow Design Group to 'trade' different attributes - for example cost vs weight.

· Helping to develop a low-complexity: high-variety product mix based on standard family templates.

· Where possible, highlighting and driving new processes / methods developed for new parts back into our legacy products.
