A large and diverse team of technicians ensure that the University functions efficiently and delivers the levels of student experience both our undergraduates and postgraduates deserve and expect of us. Working in specialist laboratories, workshops, studios and IT facilities, our technical professionals play a key role supporting, guiding and advising across our university from sciences, art, design and technology, through to sports, ceramics, nursing and physiotherapy.

The Specialist Computer Science team supports academics, researchers and students in a range of laboratory/workshop/field-based activities including those involving undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, research, enterprise and public engagement. Manchester Met values their students highly and you will contribute to giving them an excellent student experience that will allow them to develop and flourish in their chosen subjects and careers. Research is also growing in a range of Computer Science and Engineering Science disciplines.

Good development opportunities are available and there is a generous holiday entitlement.

As well as providing both routine and specialist services within the Science and Engineering labs you will primarily be involved in developing, delivering and supporting systems for new University wide ‘Big Data’ research projects and HPC across the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

We are looking for a Systems Administrator with Unix/Linux expertise to include strong scripting and troubleshooting skills.

In addition, experience or knowledge of any of the following would be an advantage:

           Windows 10

Managing and provisioning HPC systems to include performance monitoring and tuning and management of work load managers

           Database administration, MySQL/MS SQL server/Oracle

Big Data Software and systems especially Hadoop and Spark

Information Security principles and best practice

However, for the right candidate with a demonstrable interest in expanding their skills in these areas, training can be provided.

You will need to satisfy minimum levels of security clearance with respect to the data being managed.

You will be skilled in project organisation, incorporating resource planning and management, specification and implementation of facilities designed to meet high-end computational needs.
